PORTALES, N.M. – The winning streaks continued Wednesday night for Tarleton as the TexAnns won their sixth straight this season and 19
th straight against Eastern New Mexico since 2008 with a 76-60 victory at Greyhound Arena.
"This is the time of the season to get your head on right and push forward no matter how the season started," said junior forward
Ikpeaku Iwobi. "We needed to come out strong offensively but, even more so, defensively because (Eastern New Mexico) has the ability to score points and come back strong. This is a tough place to play."
The game started out with a tight battle – for at the least the first 1:53.
A jumper by Iwobi, who scored 13 points in 26 minutes of action on 6-8 shooting for the game, broke a 4-4 tie and started a run of three consecutive scores to put the TexAnns on top 10-4. The Greyhounds brought the TexAnn lead back within four three different times over the next three minutes, but with 3:38 left in the opening quarter – Iwboi struck again.
The junior forward drilled a 3-ball off a dish from
Morgan Ashmore to start a 12-6 run over the rest of the quarter and take a double-digit lead into the second quarter at 26-16.
Tarleton continued to pour it on in the opening 2:19 of the new period with 3-pointers from
Raven McGrath and
Meagan O'Dell as well as a layup from
Breanna Fuller to push the TexAnn lead to 16 at 34-18.
After the Greyhounds cut the Tarleton lead to single digits – which would ultimately be the last time Tarleton would lead by fewer than 10 points in the game – the TexAnns got a layup from Ashmore to start an 8-2 run over the rest of the half. Tarleton took a 44-30 advantage into the break at halftime.
The 44 first-half points is the most Tarleton has scored in a single half against a Lone Star Conference team this season. Iwobi had 11 of her 13 points in the opening two quarters while
Bailey Wipff had nine and Fuller added six in the opening half.
In the second half, Tarleton cruised to its sixth straight win by never leading by less than 10 points and by as many as 26, which came on Iwobi's final two points of the game with 7:33 left in the fourth.
As a team, Tarleton shot .538 from the floor, including .308 from downtown, and .762 from the charity stripe.
Joining Iwobi with a team-high 13 points was Wipff, who went 5-9 from the field. Fuller also cracked double figures with 10 points to go along with six rebounds.
Meagan O'Dell just missed double figures with nine points while
Catherine Okwilagwe (6),
Averie Mack (6), Ashmore (6), McGrath (5),
Travanti Downes (4), and
Tiara Tatum (4) rounded out the scoring. Okwilagwe flirted with a double-double as the freshman forward pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
Tarleton will return home for the final home game of the season Saturday night to host No. 9 West Texas A&M on Senior Night. The TexAnns will recognize their four seniors – Fuller, McGrath, O'Dell, and Ashmore.
