Texans advance to third consecutive NCAA South Central Region semifinal

WICHITA FALLS - No. 4-seed Tarleton is moving on to the second round of the NCAA Regional Tournament for the third straight season after routing No. 5 Colorado Mines 83-61 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Tarleton will face No. 8 Lubbock Christian on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. after LCU upset No. 1 Midwestern State. It's the first time the Texans will square off against a Heartland Conference team beyond the first round in program history. Tarleton is 3-0 all-time against Heartland opponents in the NCAA Tournament: St. Mary's, 2008; Texas A&M-International, 2014; St. Mary's, 2015.

The Texans (22-8) led from start to finish in the one-sided contest, building a lead as large as 25 points. Tarleton's defense held the Orediggers (24-8) without a field goal for the first nine minutes of the game as the Texans built an 18-3 advantage during the stretch. EJ Reed scored 10 of the first 18 points for the Texans and finished with a game-high 19 points and added four rebounds.

Chantz Chambers was making his first start since Dec. 5 and poured in 14 points - 4-of-7 from 3-point range - and pulled down four rebounds. Leading 32-20 in the closing seconds of the first half, Chambers drilled a 3-pointer at the top of the arc to send Tarleton to the locker room with a 15-point lead.

Tarleton had nine players score in the first half and shot 43 percent from the floor. Colorado Mines shot 26 percent in the first half and had eight turnovers.

The Texans held Mines' leading scorer Gokul Natesan, who came in averaging 20.7 points per game, to only 14 points in the contest with Malcolm Hamilton and Nosa Ebomwonyi playing tough man-to-man defense on the All-Conference guard.

Leading 58-46, Tarleton went on a 12-0 run to put an end to Mines' chances while Romond Jenkins gave the Texans a 20-point second-half lead with a layup with 6:35 remaining. The junior forward has been on a tear of late, averaging 12 points on 80 percent shooting and 11 rebounds in the last six games coming into tonight. Jenkins was on par with the trend and finished with 14 points on a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Charles Hill came off the bench and poured in 12 points on an efficient 5-of-7 shooting. Malcolm Hamilton added six points and Michael Hardge scored six for the Texans. Jakob Damstra scored six points, all coming off offensive rebounds.

Tarleton shot 50 percent from the floor and improved to 15-0 on the season when they shoot at least 45 percent.

Tarleton is 4-0 all-time against Lubbock Christian, having most recently played twice in 2014.
