TexAnns come up short in Friday doubleheader at Kingsville

KINGSVILLE – Tarleton fell in both games by one run to open the four-game series with Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday at Vernie and Blanche Hubert Field. The TexAnns move to 25-24 on the season and 8-18 in the Lone Star Conference.

Game 1: Texas A&M-Kingsville 10, Tarleton 9

Despite 13 hits for the TexAnns, Texas A&M-Kingsville score eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to stun Tarleton in a 10-9 loss.

The TexAnns led 9-2 thanks to a five-run outburst in the first inning. Tarleton got RBI hits from Katelyn Conlee, Alyssa Ringhausen, Avery Mullendore, and Melody Mayse in the opening frame. Lauren Powers would bring Mayse home to score in the third after Mayse tripled with one out in the inning.

Ringhausen (3-for-4), Mayse (2-for-3), Powers (2-for-4), Conlee (2-for-4), and Rebeka Allen (2-for-3) all had multi-hit games for the TexAnns.

After the Javelinas scored a pair of runs in the third, pitcher Haley Freyman would hold Kingsville scoreless until the seventh inning. TAMUK scored all eight runs with two outs and collected five straight hits to end the game.

Game 2: Texas A&M-Kingsville 3, Tarleton 2 (10)

Tarleton built a 2-0 lead over TAMUK when Avery Mullendore led off with a double down the left-field line and would later score on Delaney Wayland's sacrifice fly. The second run came in the fourth inning on Alyssa Ringhausen's RBI double to left that score Mikayla Stogsdill.

The Javelinas would add two runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game up at two. From there, the two teams would exchange zeros on the scoreboard for the next five innings and into extra frames.

In the eighth inning, Nyka Wood doubled and later advanced to third with two outs but Tarleton couldn't bring Wood home for the go-ahead run.

TAMUK scored the game-winning run on a two-out bases loaded single in the bottom of the tenth.

Haley Freyman (20-17) went the distance, striking out six in the game.
