Freyman earns 40th career win in Friday night split with Lions

COMMERCE – Haley Freyman pitched every inning of Friday's doubleheader while Katelyn Conlee three-run homer in the first inning of game two helped Tarleton take one of two from Texas A&M-Commerce Friday.

"We missed Delaney (Wayland) and Alyssa (Ringhausen) today due to injuries, but I was very proud of our resolve to bounce back and give us a chance to win against a talented Texas A&M-Commerce team today," said head coach Julie Mata. "Haley (Freyman) and Nyka (Wood) put two great games together and our defense was outstanding in game two. Also, Katelyn Conlee really had a great day at the plate."

Game 1: Texas A&M-Commerce 5, Tarleton 3

Haley Freyman went distance for the TexAnns in the opener, but four TexAnn errors led to five unearned runs for the Lions in a 5-3 series-opening loss.

The sophomore right-hander took the tough luck loss despite throwing all six innings and surrendering no earned runs. She allowed eight hits and didn't walk a batter while striking out a pair of Lions.

Tarleton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a two-run single off the bat of Melody Mayse, but Commerce would answer with three unearned runs in the ensuing half inning to take a 3-2 lead.

Rebeka Allen cashed in an RBI single in the top of the third to tie the game, but a two-run throwing error in the Commerce half of the fourth inning proved to be the difference in the opener.

The TexAnns had eight hits in game one, including two each from Mayse and Nyka Wood. Shelby Hedrick, Conlee, Avery Mullendore, and Allen had one hit each for the game.

Game 2: Tarleton 5, Texas A&M-Commerce 2

In the nightcap, a first-inning, three-run blast from Conlee was all the support Freyman needed as her defense provided an error-free game behind her in a 5-2 TexAnn win.

Conlee's blast in the top of the first came with two outs after a Shelby Hedrick walk extended the inning and put runners on first and second. Lauren Powers got Tarleton's first hit of the game with a one-out, infield single.

The inning would not stop with Conlee's home run, however, as Savannah Stech followed up with a solo shot of her own on a 2-1 count for back-to-back TexAnn home runs and a 4-0 Tarleton lead.

The TexAnns added another run on an RBI single from Nyka Wood in the second to extend the lead to 5-0 while Freyman continued to deal from the circle.

Freyman went all seven innings for Tarleton, allowing two runs – on a sixth-inning home run – on four hits and two walks. The sophomore struck out five in game two en route to her 17th win of the season and the 40th in her young career, which moves her into a tie with Brooke Saulters for sixth place on Tarleton's all-time pitching wins list. She is the seventh Tarleton pitcher in the program's 21-year history with at least 40 career wins.

Lauren Powers went 2-for-4 at the dish as the only TexAnn with a multi-hit game in the nightcap while Mayse, Wood, Conlee, Stech, and Mullendore provided the rest of Tarleton's seven-hit attack.

The TexAnns will return to action against the Lions at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the John Cain Family Field in Commerce.
