Balanced scoring attack lifts TexAnns past Texas Woman’s in Wisdom

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton got double figures from four starters as the TexAnns found their way back to the win column with a 65-57 win against Texas Woman's in Wisdom Gym Thursday night.

Mackenzie Hailey led they way as the sophomore forward poured in 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds – both to lead the team – while Ikpeaku Iwobi, Bailey Wipff, and Kylie Collins each scored 10. For Collins, it was her second double-digit scoring performance of the season and her first collegiate start.

The TexAnns trailed by double digits in the first quarter at 19-9, but closed the opening frame on a 5-0 run with a 3-pointer by Iwobi and a layup by Travanti Downes. Tarleton tied the scored at 25-25 after Collins drilled a 3-pointer and Hailey converted on a pair of free throws. Tarleton took its first lead of the game when Collins knocked down a free throw with 4:27 left in the opening half.

After Texas Woman's tied the game at 28-28, Tarleton got layups from Travanti Downes and Hailey in the final two minutes of the half to take a 32-28 lead into halftime.

Tarleton came out swinging to extend the lead to eight over the first two minutes of the new half and, after Texas Woman's pulled within one, Trejouir Wilson scored the last six points of the third quarter to send the TexAnns into the fourth quarter with a seven-point lead. Wilson was a key contributor off the bench as the freshman guard scored eight points, grabbed five rebounds, and had an assist.

The TexAnns opened the fourth quarter with an 8-2 run, highlighted by 3-pointers from Shelby Mankins and Collins, to extend the lead to a game-high 13 points at 56-43. Texas Woman's pulled within seven on two occasions, but the TexAnns maintained the lead and went on to earn their first victory over Texas Woman's since February 1, 2015.

Downes joined Wilson with eight points off the bench while Mankins (2) and Baylee Peck (1) rounded out the scoring for Tarleton. As a team, the TexAnns shot .462 from the floor, .450 from downtown, and .667 at the charity stripe, while holding the Pioneers to .322 from the floor and .222 from the 3-point line.

After playing four games over the last seven days, the TexAnns will wait a week before taking the hardwood next Thursday when Tarleton hosts West Texas A&M in a doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m.
