LAWTON, Okla. – With just four minutes left, Tarleton seemed ready to coast to its 17
th win of the season but a late surge by Cameron made things interesting in the final minutes.
Tarleton withstood the rally and left Aggie Gym with an 80-74 victory Thursday.
The Texans came out firing from beyond the arc as Tarleton started the game 4-5 from downtown for a quick 12-6 lead, which the Texans promptly extended out to 18-6 with a
Chantz Chambers layup and back-to-back
Anthony Davis buckets.
The Texans didn't stop there as they went on to pound the Aggies to the tune of a 36-18 lead with 3:22 left in the opening half and ultimately took an 11-point lead into halftime. Chambers went for 16 points on 7-8 shooting from the floor in the opening half to lead all scorers.
Chambers, a senior from Shreveport, Louisiana, would go on to score a career high 26 points on 8-12 shooting from the floor, including 2-3 from downtown, and 8-11 from the charity stripe.
"Chantz really did a good job of taking the ball to the basket tonight," said head coach
Lonn Reisman. "He's a senior and when you're playing in a tough place on the road, you've got to get that type of play from your seniors. We certainly know what Chantz is capable of doing. He has the heart of a lion, the heart of a champion, and I'm really happy for him tonight."
Tarleton maintained a double-digit lead over the first 14 minutes of the second half before Cameron pushed back.
With the Texans leading 66-52 with six minutes left, Cameron drilled a 3-ball to start a 22-14 run over the final portion of the game while the Aggies held the Texans without field goal over the final 7:35 of the contest.
But Tarleton handled their business at the charity stripe down the stretch.
Tarleton went 14-16 at the free throw in the final 4:17 of the game to hold on to the win, including successful shot in each of their last 10 free throws in the final 2:11 to seal their 17
th win of the season.
Behind Chambers' team-leading 26 points,
Ridell Camidge stepped up with his first career double-double performance and a season-high effort by a Tarleton guard. The junior from Wilmington, North Carolina hauled in 10 rebounds to go along with his 14 points while
Deshawn Riddick also scored double figures with 10 points.
Romond Jenkins scored nine points, all in the second half, before collecting his fifth foul of the night while Davis (8),
Josh Hawley (7),
Brandon Willis (4), and
Curtiss Anderson (2) rounded out the Tarleton scoring.
The Texans will look to sweep their current two-game road swing Saturday afternoon when they head north to Wichita Falls for a Lone Star Conference showdown at D.L. Ligon Coliseum with Midwestern State at 4 p.m.
