Four TexAnns score in double figures in road win over Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS – Tarleton women's basketball had four players score in double figures as the TexAnns cruised past Midwestern State, 69-57, on Saturday at D.L. Coliseum.

The TexAnns led for all but 46 seconds in the one-sided contest and improved to 9-9 overall and 8-4 in the Lone Star Conference.

The lead came quickly and stayed for good for Tarleton with its first points coming on Mackenzie Hailey's 3-pointer on its first possession of the game. Hailey finished with her 10th double-double of the season, posting 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. The TexAnns went 9-17 from behind the arc, led by Tiara Tatum's 4-5 – including makes on her first four attempts from 3-point range.

Midwestern State tied the score at 12-12 midway through the first quarter, but Tarleton closed the opening frame out on an 11-2 run led by three straight 3's from Tatum and two from Bailey Wipff. Wipff not only scored 15 points to match Hailey for a game high, but the senior guard dished out a career-high eight assists. Wipff was responsible for 35 of the team's 69 points with points and assists.

Ikpeaku Iwobi displayed her range to open the second quarter with a 3-pointer that gave the TexAnns a double-digit lead at 26-14. Iwobi finished with 11 points and six rebounds to go with a game-high three steals. Leading 26-17, Tarleton's next nine points came from the hot hand of Tatum, who poured in three straight 3-pointers for a 35-17 advantage, the largest margin of the game at 18. Tatum had 12 points at the half and finished with 13 points and five rebounds.

The TexAnns led 37-22 at halftime and shot 42 percent from the floor and only had four turnovers. Midwestern State shot 39 percent in the half, but had 12 turnovers that translated into eight TexAnn points.
Tarleton's second-half lead never fell below double digits despite Midwestern State outscoring the TexAnns 35-32 in the final two quarters.

Kylie Collins had five points, two boards and two assists in the win. Travanti Downes led the TexAnns off the bench with six points and six rebounds. Baylee Peck and Trejouir Wilson each scored two points.

Tarleton finished the game shooting 43 percent from the floor, 53 percent on 3-pointers and 78 percent (14-18) from the free-throw line.

The TexAnns will start a four-game homestand against Eastern New Mexico on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 5 :30 p.m. in Wisdom Gym.
