KINGSVILLE – No. 9 Tarleton men's basketball dropped its first game in Lone Star Conference play with a 76-71 loss on the road to Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The loss also snapped a season-long 10-game winning streak for the Texans, who are now 13-2 overall and 5-1 in LSC play.
The Texans took an early lead at 13-6 when
Ridell Camidge drilled three straight 3-pointers in the first four minutes of play. It was the biggest lead of the game for Tarleton and the last time they'd lead too.
Texas A&M-Kingsville responded with a 31-6 run to take a 37-19 lead over the Texans. The run stretched over an 11-minute span. The Javenlinas connected on six first-half 3-pointers and shot 50 percent from the floor while Tarleton shot 36 percent and committed 10 turnovers.
Another Camidge 3-pointer cut the deficit back to single digits at 55-46 with 13:45 to go in the game. Camidge finished with a game-high 23 points on 5-of-10 from behind the arc.
Tarleton worked the game back seven at the free-throw line with 9:18 remaining but the Javelinas continued to make 3-pointers and pad the lead back to double digits down the stretch.
The Texans battled foul trouble throughout the game and had two players, Camidge and
Chantz Chambers, foul out for the first time all season.
The Texans trailed by 10 with 40 seconds to go and went on a 5-0 to close the game before time running out prevented the comeback. Overall, Tarleton shot 32 percent from the floor and 28 percent behind the arc. They did, however, go 28-of-34 (82.4%) on free throws.
Deshawn Riddick scored 14 points joining Camidge as the only Texans in double figures. Riddick also recorded a team-high five assists.
Anthony Davis scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds off the bench.
Chambers and Hawley both scored eight points while Chambers grabbed a career-high seven rebounds.
Romond Jenkins was held to four points, but grabbed seven rebounds and blocked five shots.
Tarleton will return home to take on Texas A&M-Commerce on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 7:30 p.m.
