CANYON – The No. 11 TexAnns dropped their first match in over a month Saturday afternoon with a four-set loss at 'The Box' to West Texas A&M (25-22, 16-25, 21-25, 20-25).
The match opened up with Tarleton taking the first set after a back-and-forth battle over the first 38 points to a 19-19 tie.
Hannah McManus and
Alissa Johnson combined for a block to give Tarleton a 20-19 lead, which they would not relinquish. Tarleton got two kills each from
Amber Strange and
Hailey Roberts and a Roberts ace for their final five points of the set.
In the second set, West Texas A&M used an early 15-6 run over the opening 21 points to take control early before ultimately taking the second set 25-16. After WT jumped out to a 15-10 lead in the third set, Tarleton continued to battle back and pulled as close as two late, but couldn't overcome the deficit before falling 25-21.
The final set saw another early run set the tone for WT as the Lady Buffs jumped out to a 10-2 lead. Tarleton battled back with an 18-11 run to pull within one at 21-20, but WT scored four straight to close things out.
The loss snapped Tarleton's record-setting win streak at 15 and was the first loss for the TexAnns since a five-set loss to open Lone Star Conference play on September 16.
Roberts led the way with 16 kills while Strange landed nine.
Adriana Darthuy and McManus each added eight kills.
Jordyn Keamo had 37 assists while
Adrianna Knutson led the team with 24.
Michaela Rodriguez also had 11 digs.
The TexAnns remain two games ahead of Texas A&M-Commerce in the league standings with four games left. Tarleton will make its final road trip of the regular season next weekend with a trip to Midwestern State and Cameron Friday and Saturday.
