Four Texans score in double figures in win over Sul Ross

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton had four players score in double figures led by Jaraan Lands' 20 points to help get by Sul Ross, 80-76, on Tuesday in Wisdom Gym.

Sul Ross couldn't miss to open the game, jumping out to a 15-2 run in the first 3:30 of the half that led to a quick Tarleton timeout. The Texans (2-1) followed with a 15-2 run of their own as Lands had six of the team's 17 points, including a layup to tie the score at 17-17.

The Lobos jumped back in front 22-17 before Lands' layup and Corinthian Ramsey's 3-pointer knotted the game back up at 22-22 with 7:56 left in the half. Ramsey finished with 15 points on the night and was 8-of-11 at the free-throw line.

The Texans never led in the first half, as the Lobos took a 39-33 lead into the break after shooting 44 percent in the half compared to Tarleton's 33 percent.

Leading 46-39, the Texans went on a 7-0 run behind a Ruston Hayward layup and a Josh Hawley 3-pointer that cut the deficit to two points.

Moments later, Deshawn Riddick ran the fast break and lobbed a pass to Hawley for an alley-oop dunk that made it 54-53 Sul Ross with 10 minutes left in the game. The Texans took their first lead on the ensuing possession on a pair of free-throws from Lands to make it 55-54.

The Lobos would make a layup on their next possession for a 1-point lead, but Hawley's 3-pointer with 8:41 gave Tarleton the lead for good at 58-56. Hawley posted 15 points, nine rebounds and three blocks in the game.

The Lobos would get to within three points with under two minutes to go, but Nosa Ebomwonyi drilled a 3-pointer to push the game back up to a six-point lead that the Texans would close out the game at the free throw line.

Riddick scored 10 points, with five rebounds and a team-high four assists in the win. Ebomwonyi added eight points with six rebounds, while Hayward (4 points), Jesse Hill (3), Clashon Gaffney (3) and Ryan Birt (2) also scored for the Texans.

Tarleton will take on Central Oklahoma on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. in Wisdom Gym.
