STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton made its unofficial home debut Saturday afternoon as the TexAnns played host to Texas Wesleyan in a free exhibition for their final preseason tune-up. Tarleton defeated the Lady Rams 90-60 and will now turn their attention to Friday's home opener against Western State.
Â
"Offensively, we saw what we expected to see," said head coach
Misty Wilson. "We have a lot of weapons with a lot of girls who can score. Defensively, we have a long way to go. We have to find players who can and want to be on the floor when it matters most. For an exhibition, I thought we played well.
Â
"I thought we were a little impatient at times at Baylor (within our offense)," she continued. "I like that we were more patient and executed our sets. Most of my displeasure was on the defensive end. Defensively, we need to take more pride in our defense. Giving up 60 points to Texas Wesleyan is too much. Not to take anything away from them, but the size and the caliber of players we have, we should be able to defend better than we did this afternoon."
Â
Tarleton had five players score in double figures, led by
Mackenzie Hailey with 14 points and eight rebounds in 22 minutes of work. The combination of
McKinley Bostad (13) and
Kylie Collins (12) added 25 points while
Katie Webster scored 11 and
Lucy Benson added 10 off the bench.
Â
Tiara Tatum just missed the double-digit mark with nine while
Shelby Mankins,
Haley Fieseler, and
Hannah Allen each scored four.
Makaila Tyer (3),
Nina Alvarez (3),
Deziray Turner (2), and
Trejouir Wilson (1) rounded out Tarleton's offense.
Â
The TexAnns forced 20 Ram turnovers on the day and shot .524 from the floor on 33-63 shooting. Tarleton was also 10-19 from downtown for a .526 shooting clip.
Â
Tarleton will open the regular season Friday at 5 p.m. in Wisdom Gym against Western State in the TexAnn Tip-Off Classic.
