COMMERCE – Despite the 10
th highest scoring performance in Tarleton history from
Chantz Chambers, the No. 9 Texans suffered a setback at the Field House in Commerce with an 82-83 loss to the Lions.
The Texans, who entered the game ranked No. 9 in the NABC national poll, were also recently named the No. 1 seed in the South Central Regional rankings while Texas A&M-Commerce checked in at No. 7 of the official NCAA regional poll.
Tarleton is also currently in pursuit of its fifth Lone Star Conference regular season championship since 2012 as the Texans remain atop the LSC standings with two games left to play. The Texans can still secure a share of the league title with a UT Permian Basin loss at Angelo State tonight.
Chantz Chambers was superb for Tarleton Thursday night as the senior guard went for a career high 33 points on 11-19 shooting from the floor, including 3-6 from downtown, and 8-9 at the free throw line while also grabbing eight rebounds. Chambers' 33-point performance is No. 10 all-time in Tarleton history and highest scoring performance since De'Andre Upchurch went for 38 points at Eastern New Mexico on Feb. 22, 2014.
Despite trailing for the entire game, the Texans made things interesting over the final 1:11.
Tarleton trailed by 11 with 1:11 left before a pair of
Anthony Davis free throws started a 15-5 Texan run down the stretch as Tarleton tried to pull off the comeback. The Texans could only get within one, however, before the final buzzer sounded.
Romond Jenkins recorded an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double while Davis (12) and
Ridell Camidge (14) also cracked double figures.
Deshawn Riddick rounded out the scoring from the starting five with seven points of his own.
The Tarleton bench was 44 seconds away from being shutout for the first time since Feb. 22, 2012, but
Nosa Ebomwonyi knocked down a pair of free throws with 44 seconds left and
Brandon Willis buried the game's final points on a 3-ball with one second left to round out Tarleton's scoring.
Tarleton will take a week between games as the Texans head to Odessa for a crucial Lone Star Conference date with UT Permian Basin.
