CANYON – Tarleton women's basketball fell in its regular season finale to West Texas A&M 73-69 on Saturday at the First United Bank Center.
The TexAnns tied the score at 69-69 with a minute to go, but the Lady Buffs scored the final four points to secure the win. Tarleton (13-13, 12-8) will have the No. 5 seed in the LSC Tournament in Allen and take on No. 4 Texas A&M-Commerce.
Tarleton was led by
Mackenzie Hailey's 18 points despite the sophomore battling foul trouble in the second half. Hailey scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half.
The TexAnns had to come from behind early in the contest after facing a 15-8 deficit in the first quarter.
Kylie Collins drained a 3-pointer to cut the WT lead to 21-18 with 6:45 left in the first half, but the Lady Buffs led 29-23 at the break.
Tarleton's 3-point shooting in the second half brought the back in the game. The TexAnns connected on three 3-pointers in the first half and drilled five 3-pointers in the second half. Hailey's 3-ball and Ipeaku Iwobi's jumper to open the third quarter made it a one-point game at 29-28.
The two teams exchanged buckets as the game stayed within one possession throughout the third quarter.
Tiara Tatum, who posted 13 points in the game, tied the game at 41-41 for the TexAnns with a pair of free throws with 3:53 left in the third quarter. The Lady Buffs, however, took a five-point lead into the fourth.
WT pulled back on top by six to start the quarter but the TexAnns came firing back behind nine straight points from Hailey, including a 3-pointer to tie the score at 63-63 with 4:38 remaining. Trailing 69-65,
Bailey Wipff cut backdoor for an easy layup and Iwobi drained a pair of free throws to tie the game at 69-69. The Lady Buffs scored the final four points for the win.
WT's inside game played a big factor in the game as the Lady Buffs outscored the TexAnns 50-20 in the paint, led by Lilley Vander Zee's game-high 22 points.
The TexAnns shot 44 percent from the floor, 42 percent on 3-pointers and 87 percent at the free throw line.
Kylie Collins dished out a career-high eight assists and also scored six points in the game.
Bailey Wipff had 10 points and
Travanti Downes added 11 as they joined Hailey (18) and Tatum (11) in double figures. Iwobi grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to go with seven points.
The TexAnns will take on Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday, March 3 in the first round of the LSC Tournament at the Allen Event Center.
