Big fourth inning sparks win for Texans in series finale

LAWTON, Okla. – The Tarleton offense wasn't messing around in the final game of the Texans' non-conference series with Cameron as the Tarleton barrels pounded out 15 runs on 14 hits, including home runs from Austin Call and Francisco Rodriguez, to claim the series with a 15-2 win Sunday.

"We're really proud of the kids and the way they responded this weekend," said head coach Bryan Conger. "They were able to stay locked into the moment really well from the beginning to the end. There are a lot of positives to take away from this and hopefully we learned more about ourselves as we continue to grow."

Austin Call got the offense rolling with a solo shot to left in the top of the first to put Tarleton up 1-0. Cameron answered back with two in the bottom of the second before the Texans pulled away starting in the third.

After back-to-back walks set up Tarleton, Jake Hasbrouck cashed in with an RBI single through the right side to even the score at 2-2. Rodriguez and Garret Kizer piled on with RBI singles of their own to push the advantage to 4-2 later in the inning.

Matt Herrick worked a scoreless third to set the table for the offense's big inning in the fourth, which started when Blake Adams wore the first of his two hit by pitches on the afternoon and stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Lemons and Hasbrouck followed up by wearing a couple of pitches for free bases before Luis Rivas coaxed a bases load walk for an RBI.

After that, Rodriguez struck for the inning's big hit as the junior centerfielder popped a grand slam to left field to bring his RBI total on the day to five and put the Texans up 9-2. Austin Call provided a 2-run single while Lemons capped off the fourth with an RBI single of his own to open the flood gates at 12-2.

Tarleton tacked on three more in the seventh, which would ultimately be the final inning, when Colton Nelson drove in his first two collegiate RBIs with a two-run single up the middle. Trevor Inman plated the game's final run when Nelson scored on a sacrifice fly.

Meanwhile, the pitching combination of Seth Gill, Herrick, and Hunter Houston kept the Aggies in check for seven innings. Herrick earned the win by throwing 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, over which he allowed one run and struck out four. Gill earned the start and allowed two runs on four hits and a walk in 1.2 innings of work.

Houston came on to pitch the final two innings, allowing no runs on two hits and a walk.

Rodriguez and Call combined for eight RBIs at the plate as Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and 5 driven in while Call was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three brought home. Jake Shelby also notched a multi-hit game by going 2-for-5 with a run scored.

Adams, Stacy Heinatz, Lemons, Hasbrouck, Jose Reyes, Nelson, and Kizer each had one base hit on the afternoon to round out the Tarleton offense.

The Texans will return to Stephenville this weekend for a three-game series with No. 30 Lubbock Christian, beginning with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Friday afternoon.
