ALLEN – No. 25 Tarleton came within seconds of eliminating Angelo State for the third straight season, but the Texans' comeback attempt came up short in an 85-82 overtime loss in the first round of the Lone Star Conference tournament at the Allen Event Center.
The Texans (22-7) entered the LSC tournament ranked fourth in the final NCAA South Central regional poll and will have to wait and see if their season will continue with the NCAA selection show scheduled for Sunday, March 5 at 9:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
Tarleton trailed by 12 with 2:18 left in the first half, but the Texans displayed their resiliency early by going on a 9-2 run to close the half, making the score 35-30 Angelo State at the break.
The Texans had 12 first-half turnovers, matching their season average in just 20 minutes. They finished with 20 for the game.
Romond Jenkins poured in five straight points in the first two minutes of the second half to cut the deficit to 41-39. Jenkins finished with a team-high 23 points and 14 rebounds to go with three steals and two blocks.
Angelo State's Quay King drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to push the Rams' lead back to 63-51 with 9:04 remaining. The Texans score the next nine points to climb right back into the game.
Nosa Ebomwonyi tied the game at 71 on a 3-pointer with 1:55 to go. Ebomwonyi finished with 10 points, five rebounds and three steals in his first start of the season.
Trailing by two with under a minute to play, Jenkins made a tough layup to tie the score and send the game to overtime.
Chantz Chambers gave Tarleton its first lead since the opening minutes of the first half on a 3-pointer at the top of the key to put the Texans up 77-75. Chambers scored 13 of his 18 points in the second half and overtime, including another 3-pointer to tie the game at 82 with 1:07 left.
King made a layup with 45 seconds left on the clock that turned to be the game winner for Angelo State.
Anthony Davis registered his first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
Deshawn Riddick scored four ponts and had a team-high five assits.
