Offensive struggles haunt Texans in doubleheader loss at Kingsville

KINGSVILLE – Tarleton dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Texas A&M-Kingsville, scoring one run on seven hits on the day.

Game 1: Texas A&M-Kingsville 5, Tarleton 1

Tarleton dropped its third straight game as Texas A&M-Kingsville scored five unanswered runs over the last three innings to hand the Texans a 5-1 loss in the first game of Saturday's twin bill.

Francisco Rodriguez and Dylan Lemons sparked the offense in the opening frame as Rodriguez singled to center field then came around to score on Lemons' RBI double into left field for a 1-0 Tarleton lead.

The lead held up over the first three innings until Kingsville scored four in the fourth and one more in the sixth. Evan Pontley took the loss despite throwing a complete game, allowing eight hits and no walks while striking out two.

Rodriguez had two base hits on the day while Lemons, Jake Hasbrouck, Luis Rivas, and Jake Shelby each had one hit to round out the six-hit performance.

Game 2: Texas A&M-Kingsville 3, Tarleton 0

Tarleton suffered a one-hit, shutout loss to cap off Saturday's doubleheader.

Francisco Rodriguez and Blake Adams started the game by reaching on a hit by pitch and an error by the shortstop, respectively, but Tarleton couldn't push the runs across and only managed three walks and a third-inning double by Rodriguez the rest of the way on offense.

Meanwhile, the pitching combination of Colby Fowler and Conner Fletcher were solid over six innings for Tarleton. Fowler went the first 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Fletcher came out of the pen and allowed one unearned run on one hit and also struck out three in the final 3.2 innings.

Tarleton and Texas A&M-Kingsville will wrap up the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Kingsville.
