Barrels back up Hickey’s gem as Texans take opener from UTPB

STEPHENVILLE – Nathan Hickey got plenty of run support as the junior right-hander hurled seven innings and struck out seven to lead the Texans to a 14-2 win over UT Permian Basin in Thursday's series opener-.

The teams traded solo runs over the first inning and a half as UTPB scored one in the first and one in the second while Tarleton scored one in the first on an RBI single from Jake Hasbrouck through the left side. Tarleton later tied the game at 2-2 when Francisco Rodriguez doubled, stole third, and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.

After that, Hickey shut down the Falcons while his offense scored seven runs over two innings to break away.

The bottom of the order started things in the fourth when Jake Shelby, Hunter Seales, and Jose Reyes loaded the bases for Rodriguez, who scored one with an RBI single through the left side to put Tarleton on top. Austin Call cashed in with a two-run double to left center before Dylan Lemons capped off the four-run inning with an RBI single into left to plate Call for a 6-2 Tarleton lead after four.

Following another shutdown inning from Hickey, Tarleton scored three more in the fifth on a full-count, two-RBI double from Jose Reyes and an RBI triple by Rodriguez into center. Rodriguez finished a home run shy of the cycle with a 3-for-4 day with two runs and two RBI.

Tarleton added five more in the bottom of the eighth to secure the early finish in eight innings when Dylan Lemons went deep to left for a monstrous two-run home run and Trevor Inman finished the game with a three-run walk-off shot to deep right for the final runs of the game.

Hickey improved to 6-2 on the season with his seven innings of work before giving way to Wren Petty, who worked a flawless eighth inning.

Tarleton pounded out 16 hits as a team, led by Rodriguez's three. Lemons, Seales, and Inman each had two hits while Reyes, Shelby, Dalton Richardson, Hasbrouck, Stacy Heinatz, and Call each had one.

Tarleton and UTPB will return to action tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. in Stephenville.
