DENTON – Tarleton dropped both ends of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at Pioneer Field in Denton Saturday to suffer its first Lone Star Conference series sweep of the season.
"We didn't have all three aspects of the game this weekend," said head coach
Mark Cumpian. "We played bad and there's no excuses for that. We have to come back next time out with a better focus and energy."
Game 1: Texas Woman's 11, Tarleton 7
A six-run third inning by the Pioneers spoiled a 6-1 Tarleton advantage as Texas Woman's took the first game of Saturday's twin bill 11-7.
After Texas Woman's got on the board with one in the first, the TexAnns came out swinging in the second to the tune of a five-run second inning. Two of Tarleton's runs came across on errors as the Pioneers committed three defensive miscues in the inning while
Meghann Wrinkle brought home one run in an RBI single and
Savannah Stech plated a pair with a two-run singled to left center.
After a shutdown second inning, Tarleton tacked on one more in the third on an RBI single from
Maddie Quintanar for a 6-1 TexAnn lead.
After that, Texas Woman's answered with six in the third, three in the fourth, and one in the sixth while Tarleton was only able to tack on a sacrifice fly in the seventh from
Kaitlyn Thomas to bring the game to its final score.
Eight of Tarleton's nine starters had hits in the game as the TexAnns scored seven runs on 13 hits in the opening game, led by two-hit performances from Stech,
Marisa Flores,
Avery Mullendore, Thomas, and
Kadyn Kirkpatrick.
Maddie Quintanar, Wrinkle, and
Megan Durante each had one hit as Durante extended her team high hitting streak to 13.
Game 2: Texas Woman's 4, Tarleton 1
In the series finale, Tarleton managed only three base hits and fell to Texas Woman's 4-1.
The TexAnns managed only a sacrifice fly from
Nyka Wood to bring home Quintanar in the sixth inning while Texas Woman's posted solo runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
Kayleigh Williams went the distance in the circle, allowing four runs – only three earned – on 11 hits and a walk while striking out three. Quintanar had two of Tarleton's three hits while Stech had the third.
Tarleton will return to action on April 18 with a 3 p.m. doubleheader trip to Lubbock against Lubbock Christian.
