STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton held Texas A&M-Kingsville to a 1-11 shooting effort from the floor in the first half and cruised to its fifth consecutive victory with a 60-43 win Saturday afternoon in Wisdom Gym.
Tarleton held Kingsville to just 11 points in the first half, which is the lowest scoring total the TexAnns have allowed in a game since holding Arlington Baptist to 11 points in the second half of a game on Dec. 3, 2015. The TexAnns held the Javelinas to a .091 shooting percentage from the floor and forced 14 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes while building a 25-11 halftime lead.
Katie Webster got the scoring started with a jumper on the opening possession for the TexAnns. Kingsville answered with a three-ball two possessions later to take a 3-2 lead, but that would be the last field goal the Javelinas would be allowed for a while as the TexAnns held the Javelinas without a made shot from the floor for 16:07 over the opening half.
Meanwhile, Webster scored the first six points of the game for Tarleton and the TexAnns were able to jump out to a 13-5 lead after the opening quarter.
Mackenzie Hailey got the scoring started in the second quarter with back-to-back layups for the first of 12 TexAnn points in the quarter to push their lead to 25-11 at halftime.
The third quarter saw a surge of offense from both sides, but an 11-0 run by Tarleton's Webster and
Tiara Tatum kept Kingsville from getting too close as Tarleton pushed its lead to a game-high 25 points with 5:04 left in the third quarter.
Tarleton cruised over the final 15 minutes and never led by fewer than 17 the rest of the way.
Hailey led the way for Tarleton with her second straight and 18
th career double-double as the sophomore from Burleson scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
McKinley Bostad and
Tiara Tatum each poured in 13 points while Webster added 11 points. Bostad dished out a career-high nine assists in a near double-double effort.
Nina Alvarez (4),
Lucy Benson (2), and
Baylee Peck (2) rounded out the scoring for Tarleton.
Tarleton improves to 9-5 overall and 3-3 in Lone Star Conference action this season. The TexAnns will return to action Tuesday night with a road game at Texas A&M-Commerce at 5:30 p.m.
