Withrow, TexAnns handle Eastern New Mexico in Sunday night series opener

STEPHENVILLE – After being delayed two days due to weather, Tarleton finally made its home debut Sunday night and took the opener from Eastern New Mexico 4-1 behind the sixth win of the season from Jordan Withrow.

After Eastern New Mexico got on the board with a solo homer from the second batter of the game, Withrow settled in and dealt over the rest of the game. The sophomore from Trenton threw all seven innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out 10. With the win, she improved to 6-2 on the season.

Meanwhile, her Eastern New Mexico counterpart was also enjoying some early success as Leslie Reyes took a no-hitter into the fourth inning.

Tanna Huie, who was already Tarleton's lone baserunner of the game to that point with a first-inning walk, put together a stellar at bat to battle back from an 0-2 count and coax a leadoff walk. After a sacrifice bunt from Nyka Wood, Tarleton finally cracked the hit column with an RBI double from Megan Durante to tie things up at 1-1 after four.

After Withrow answered with a goose egg in the top of the fifth, Tarleton plated three on a sacrifice fly from Huie and a two-run single through the left side by Wood to extend the lead to 4-1. That would go on to be the final score as Eastern had one runner reach in each of the final two innings but were quickly erased with a throw down to second from Wood in the sixth and a game-ending double play from Karli Herron to Marisa Flores to Durante to seal it.

Tarleton scored four runs on three hits – one each from Wood, Durante, and Flores.

The TexAnns and Greyhounds will close out the series with a 12 p.m. doubleheader tomorrow in Stephenville.
