SILVER CITY, NM –
Corinthian Ramsey kicked things into another gear down the stretch as the junior scored nine consecutive points – and ultimately 13 of the team's final 22 points – inside the final 2:30 of the game to seal a road win for Tarleton over Western New Mexico Saturday afternoon.
Tarleton was forced to play from behind over most of the opening half as Western New Mexico jumped out to a quick six-point lead at 11-5, but the Texans clawed back and took a 17-16 lead with 3:36 left in the first half on a jumper from
Jesse Hill. The Mustangs retook the lead and built a three-point advantage with one minute left before
Deshawn Riddick drilled a triple to tie things up at the break.
The Texans opened the new half on a 12-4 run to take its then-largest lead of the night at 34-26. Western New Mexico would answer, however, and retake the lead then hold it until the final five and half minutes.
Ramsey tied the score at 44-44 with a layup at 5:09 before
Nosa Ebomwonyi delivered five straight points on a three ball and a tip-in to give the Texans a 49-46 edge that carried down to the 2:33 mark.
Enter, Ramsey.
The junior guard from Arlington got the run started with a layup then was fouled and sank two free throws following a defensive steal from
Josh Hawley. Ramsey then dropped a three ball and threw down a one-handed slam to extend the Tarleton lead to 58-49.
Tarleton got four free throws from
Deshawn Riddick and Ramsey and back-to-back dunks by Hawley to close out the victory.
Ramsey led the team in scoring with 17 points, all of which came in the second half, while Hawley went for 16 points and eight rebounds. Riddick also cracked double digits with 11 points.
Jaraan Lands and Ebomwonyi each scored eight while
Jesse Hill rounded out the scoring with six.
As a team, the Texans shot .462 from the floor and .909 from the free throw line.
Tarleton will make its last regular season road trip this week with a Thursday visit to Kingsville and a Saturday trip to Angelo State.
