SILVER CITY, N.M. – Tarleton's once 25-point third quarter lead turned into a narrow victory as the TexAnns escaped with a 70-64 win over Western New Mexico on Saturday at Drag's Court.
Mackenzie Hailey led the TexAnns with 13 points, eight rebounds, and four steals. Six TexAnns had at least eight points in the win.
The TexAnns (15-7, 9-5) exploded out of the gate against a winless Mustang team (0-22, 0-14), leading 14-6 at the first media timeout. The TexAnns led 21-14 after the first quarter.
The second quarter is where Tarleton pulled away to take control, outscoring Western New Mexico 23-9. The TexAnns opened the quarter on a 14-0 run in the first five minutes of play.
Tiara Tatum connected on a pair of buckets, followed by a pair of 3-pointers from
McKinley Bostad.
Lucy Benson's jumper with 11 seconds left in the half gave the TexAnns a 21-point lead at the break, 44-23. The TexAnns shot 52 percent in the first half, making six 3-pointers and had 15 assists.
The TexAnns' largest lead came with eight minutes left in the third quarter, a 25-point lead at 48-23 on a Tatum jumper. The Mustangs followed with a 9-0 run and got to within 11 points in the third as they outscored the TexAnns 16-9 in the third quarter.
The TexAnns held a 59-44 lead in the fourth quarter, but the Mustangs came firing back once again with an 8-0 run to get back to within single digits. With the Tarleton lead only seven with a two minutes to go,
Makaila Tyer came off the bench and hit two 3-pointers to give the TexAnns some breathing room. Tyer hit a corner three to push the lead back to 10 and then with the lead down to five with under a minute to go, Tyer drilled another three to push the lead back to eight to hold on for the win.
Tarleton had four players score eight points:
Kylie Collins,
McKinley Bostad,
Katie Webster and
Baylee Peck. Collins, Bostad, Webster and
Nina Alvarez each had four assists as part of a 21-assists effort for the TexAnns.
Lucy Benson added four points and
Trejouir Wilson scored three.
Tarleton will travel to Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 5:15 p.m.
