SAN ANTONIO – Tarleton dropped its fifth straight and suffered a sweep in the three-game series at St. Mary's Saturday afternoon.
Game 1: St. Mary's 13, Tarleton 4
St. Mary's scored 12 runs over the first four innings and Tarleton was unable to climb back in a 13-4 loss in the first game of Saturday's twin bill.
After the Rattlers scored two in the first, Tarleton cut the deficit in half in the top of the second when
Hunter Thomas scored on a double play. However, the Rattlers answered with five in the second, four in the third, and one in the fourth to build a 12-1 lead.
Tarleton scored three in the sixth on RBI singles from
Blake Burns and
Sam Scarborough and a bases-loaded walk from
Tyler Fowler with one out but could plate no more with a strikeout and a groundout.
Burns had a two-hit performance with a run and an RBI while Fowler,
Jacob Walker, Thomas, Scarborough, and
Dylan Antonelli had one hit each in the seven-hit effort.
Chris Reed rook the loss in two innings of work.
Michael Pilato,
Jacob Cornell and
Ligon West accounted for the final four innings on the mound.
Game 2: St. Mary's 8, Tarleton 6
A rocky fourth inning doomed Tarleton in the final game of the series as the Texans fell 8-6.
Tarleton jumped out to its first lead of the series in the top of the first when Coby Seltzer cashed in for two RBI with one swing when he ripped a double to right center – plating
Jacob Walker and
Jordan Parker for a 2-0 edge.
After St. Mary's answered in the first, Fowler drove in another Tarleton run with a sacrifice fly to right for a 3-2 lead. The score held up through the third until Tarleton struck again in the fourth when Fowler brought home Burns on an RBI double to right for a 4-3 edge.
St. Mary's responded with a four-spot in the bottom of the fourth and Tarleton was unable to claw back. The Rattlers added one in the sixth to lead 8-4. Tarleton scored two more in the eighth on a run-scoring double play and an error. Tarleton was sat down in order in the ninth.
Burns once again led the team with a two-hit performance while Fowler,
Jordan Parker, Seltzer, Scarborough, and
Luke Morton had one hit each.
Tarleton will hit the road next weekend for a four-game series in Fort Smith, Ark.
