Missed opportunities haunt Tarleton in walk-off loss at Texas Woman’s

DENTON – Tarleton got a runner in scoring position in four of the first six innings but couldn't push any runs across before ultimately falling 2-1 in an extra-inning walk-off double in the series-opener at Texas Woman's Friday night.

Trailing 1-0 in the seventh, Kaylee Rodriquez sparked a rally to extend the game by leading off with a double down the left field line. After she was replaced by Lexi Grimaldo on the base paths and bunted to third by Elizabeth Svienty, Georgia Capell tied the game at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly to deep right. Jordan Withrow sat the Pioneers down in order in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extras.

Tarleton went down in order in the eighth and Texas Woman's completed the walk-off in their half with a one-out single and a two-out double.

The game started with Texas Woman's striking right off the bat. The Pioneers led off the game with a double and plated their first run of the game two batters later on back-to-back grounders to take a 1-0 lead.

Tarleton couldn't take advantage of scoring opportunities in the second, fifth or sixth inning. Tarleton stranded two in the second and bases loaded in the fifth before getting a runner to third with one away in the sixth without pushing a run across which sent the TexAnns into the seventh down 1-0 before Rodriquez's double.

Tarleton got seven base hits from seven different players – Svienty, Tanna Huie, Amanda Conner, Morgan Ling, Kadyn Kirkpatrick, Grimaldo and Rodriquez. The hits from Conner and Rodriquez went for two bases.

Jordan Withrow took the tough-luck loss in the circle, throwing all 7.2 innings with eight strikeouts. She allowed only two hits over the first seven innings.

Tarleton and Texas Woman's will resume the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader at Pioneer Field.
