SAN ANGELO – Tarleton dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Angelo State.
Game 1: Angelo State 5, Tarleton 4
Tarleton surrendered four unanswered runs, including the walk-off winner, in a 5-4 loss to Angelo State in Saturday's doubleheader opener at Foster Field.
The Texans were in complete control over the first three and a half innings Saturday as
Blake Burns and
Hunter Thomas provided a RBI each in the first inning to give the Texans a 2-0 lead before the Rams ever got to swing the bat.
Brian Archibald earned the start and extended his scoreless innings streak out to 14 straight before giving up an RBI double in the second inning to cut the Tarleton lead in half at 2-1. The Texans answered with another RBI base knock from Burns in the third and a RBI grounder from
Sam Scarborough in the top of the fourth to give the Texans a 4-1 edge.
The Rams answered with a two-run home run in the fourth and tied the game in the fifth when a run scored on a double play. After a scoreless sixth, a hit by pitch and two singles from Angelo State walked it off for the Rams 5-4.
Tarleton pounded out 11 hits for the game, led by three from Burns.
Jacob Walker and
Colby Seltzer each had two while
Tyler Fowler, Thomas,
Jon Law, and
Jake Spence each had one to round out the offense.
Archibald went the first five innings before giving way to
Brett Gilchrist out of the bullpen for the final inning and then some.
Game 2: Angelo State 6, Tarleton 1
Tarleton took an early lead but couldn't score again despite outhitting Angelo State for the game and the Rams took the series with a doubleheader sweep.
The Texans got on the board first when
Tyler Fowler scored from second on an RBI single to center field.
The 1-0 lead held up over the first three innings but Angelo answered with two in the fourth and four in the sixth to hand the Texans a 6-1 loss in game three of the series.
Tarleton got one hit each from six different Texans –
Colby Seltzer, Fowler, Thomas,
Jake Spence,
Jordan Parker, and
Sam Scarborough.
Alex DeBell earned the start and threw 5.0 innings while striking out eight. He gave way to
Connor Flanagan out of the bullpen for the final inning.
Tarleton and Angelo State will close out the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
