STEPHENVILLE –
Brian Archibald continued to deal as the senior right-hander delivered Tarleton a game-one victory in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader over Eastern New Mexico. Tarleton would go on to split the twin bill with a loss in game two.
Game 1: Tarleton 5, Eastern New Mexico 0
Brian Archibald mowed down the Greyhound hitters for seven innings and was given the support of three home runs as Tarleton won 5-0 Saturday afternoon.
Tyler Parker got the offense rolling early with a two-run home run in the first inning with a long ball to deep left center that put Tarleton up 2-0. Fowler's shot was a two-run home run that scored him and
Tyler Fowler.
Tarleton added a solo home run from
Abel Osoria in the fourth and a two-run home run from
Jake Spence in the sixth for the rest of their offense. Tarleton managed 10 hits in the game from seven different Texans –
Colby Seltzer,
Tyler Fowler,
Blake Burns, Parker, Spence, Osoria, and
Sam Scarborough. Parker, Spence, and Scarborough all had two hits for the day.
Archibald allowed just four hits in his day of work while walking a pair and striking out eight.
Game 2: Eastern New Mexico 7, Tarleton 4
Tarleton couldn't overcome a five-run first inning and the Texans were forced to settle for a doubleheader split Saturday afternoon.
After the Greyhounds came out and put up five before the Texans ever touched the bats, Tarleton started inching back into the game by getting one back in the first on a RBI single from
Jake Spence.
The teams traded runs in the fourth and fifth when Eastern tacked on one run in each and Tarleton scored one in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from
Colby Seltzer and two in the fifth on a two-run home run from Spence to pull the Texans within three. Tarleton could get no closer, however.
Spence went 2-4 at the plate with three RBI while Seltzer, Burns, Parker,
Zach Mesa, Scarborough, and
Jacob Walker each had one hit to round out the offense.
Alex DeBell earned the start and went the first 2.1 innings before giving way to
Connor Flanagan and
Chris Reed out of the bullpen. Reed pitched the final 1.1 innings of work flawlessly.
Tarleton and Eastern New Mexico will resume the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Stephenville.
