Texans drop two to West Texas A&M

CANYON – Tarleton fell in both games of Friday's series-opening doubleheader at Wilder Park in Canyon.

Game 1: West Texas A&M 7, Tarleton 4

Tarleton dropped the opening game of the series to West Texas A&M despite a multi-home run effort from Hunter Thomas.

Thomas gave Tarleton a 3-0 lead right off the bat with a three-run job in the first inning, but Tarleton surrendered two in the first and two in the second to fall behind 4-3. Thomas struck again with a solo homer in the fourth to tie things up, but the Buffs answered with two in the fourth and one in the sixth to lead 7-4.

Tarleton went down in order in the final three innings and couldn't inch any closer.

Thomas paced the offense with two hits – both long balls – two runs scored and four RBI. Jacob Walker and Colby Seltzer had one hit each for Tarleton. Brian Archibald suffered the loss on the mound with all six innings of work.

Game 2: West Texas A&M 8, Tarleton 2

Tarleton couldn't climb out of an early hole and fell in the second half of Friday's doubleheader to West Texas A&M 8-2 at Wilder Park in Canyon.

The Buffs jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first two innings and carried that lead into the seventh when Tarleton cracked the score column on an RBI single from Zach Mesa to plate Tyler Parker.

After WT pulled away with three more in the eighth, Mesa scored on a wild pitch in the ninth for Tarleton's final run of the evening.

Mesa led the offense with two hits while Jacob Walker, Colby Seltzer, and Blake Burns added one hit each. Ty Jones went five innings and took the loss on the mound while Chris Reed pitched the final three innings of relief.

Tarleton and West Texas A&M will resume the series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. following expected weather in Canyon all day Saturday.
