Withrow perseveres, finishes off second no-hitter after 17-hour delay

ODESSA – Patience is a virtue and there may not be a more virtuous student-athlete at Tarleton than Jordan Withrow after having to wait just over 17 hours to officially lock in her second career no-hitter.

Withrow was phenomenal in game one of the series against UT Permian Basin last night and for four batters this afternoon.

Despite putting on the leadoff hitter via walk or hit by pitch in four of the five innings, wearing a pitch turned out to be the only hitting UT Permian Basin would do for the evening. Withrow walked five, hit two and struck out 10 in her six total innings.

She joins Heather Russell (3) as the only players in Tarleton Softball history with multiple career no-hitters.

The game was put on hold at 7:55 p.m. with Tarleton leading 8-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, leaving Withrow with three more outs to get while keeping the Falcons off the board to secure the no-hitter. When the weather wouldn't allow for play to continue, Lone Star Conference policy sent the game into a halted status.

The coaches and one conference official mutually agreed to allow the game to be marked complete early Saturday morning, but minutes later, the conference reversed field and required the teams to take the field and continue game one from the bottom of the sixth.

Withrow went back on the field and worked around a one-out walk to strikeout the final two Falcon hitters and lock in the no-hitter.

Tarleton got on the board in the second inning when Lexi Grimaldo and Elizabeth Svienty cashed in with RBI base hits to give the TexAnns a 2-0 lead. Grimaldo drove home Gracie King with a RBI single and Svienty plated Grimaldo with a double.

Tanna Huie and Karli Herron accounted for another two spot in the third and a 4-0 Tarleton lead when the seniors each teed off for solo home runs over the first three batters of the inning.

Two more runs came across in the fifth on a RBI double by Amanda Conner and a bunt single and an error that allowed Conner to come across for a 6-0 lead. Georgia Capell went yard to lead off the sixth and Herron later scored on a throwing error for Tarleton's fourth two-run inning of the game.

Svienty was the catalyst for the offense with a 3-4 day in the leadoff spot, including two doubles, while Amanda Conner also enjoyed a three-hit performance. Huie, Capell, Herron, Morgan Ling, and Grimaldo had one hit each to round out the offense.

The series will resume today with a doubleheader.
