Texan Baseball drops series opener to UAFS

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton was unable to overcome an early deficit in Friday's series opener and dropped the first game against Arkansas-Fort Smith 7-1.

UAFS got the scoring started with two in the first and tacked on three more in the third – including a pair of unearned runs – while the Texan offense was kept off the board through the first five innings. The Lions added two more in the eighth to complete their scoring.

Zach Mesa drove in the first Tarleton run of the game with an RBI single into right field that plated Jordan Parker from second. Tarleton did load the bases twice but couldn't capitalize.

Wade Raburn, Luke Morton, and Mesa each had two base hits while Tyler Fowler, Blake Burns, Jordan Parker, and Dean Frew had one hit each to round out the offense.

Justin Waltmon started the game and went the first six innings, allowing five runs – three earned – on eight hits and three walks while striking out four. Ty Windham and John Bridgeman combined for the final three innings of work on the mound.

Tarleton and UAFS will return to action in a doubleheader tomorrow at 1 p.m.
