STEPHENVILLE – Grand Canyon scored 15 unanswered runs in the final four innings to come from behind and top Tarleton 16-7 in Game 1 at the Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex.
The Texans had the bats working early against the Lopes, scoring four runs in the first four innings.
Kemuel Thomas-Rivera launched his team-leading eighth home run of the season to dead center for a 1-0 lead. Thomas-Rivera went 3-for-5 on the day with 3 RBI after adding a ninth inning two-run home run.
Tarleton took a 3-0 lead over the WAC-leading Lopes on a two-run single from
Wade Raburn in the second inning. Raburn drove home
Dean Frew and
Ian Groves, who both singled to lead off the inning. Frew would put the Texans up 4-1 in the fourth on a lead off solo homer to left, his third of the season.
Frew was one of five Texans with a multi-hit game, joining Thomas-Rivera, Raburn (2-for-4),
Tyler Fowler (2-for-5),
Dean Frew (2-for-4) and
Blake Burns (2-for-3). Tarleton posted 13 hits in the game.
Bryce Hackett got the start for the Texans and dominated the first five innings on the mound. Hackett held the Lopes scoreless in the first three innings and went 5.2 innings allowing four runs (one earned) and struck out five in the no-decision.
Grand Canyon plated three runs on a pair of Texan errors in the sixth to tie the score at 4-4. The Lopes combined for five homers in the sixth, seventh, eighth innings to take a 10-4 lead before adding four runs in the ninth.
The Texans scored three runs in the ninth on home runs from
Reed Hamilton and Thomas-Rivera.
Tarleton will continue the four-game series with GCU and play a Saturday doubleheader with game two scheduled for 1 p.m.
