CEDAR CITY, Utah – For the second consecutive match, Tarleton lost the first set but battled back to ultimately win as they took down Southern Utah 3-2, (22-25, 25-19, 25-25, 22-25, 15-13) on Saturday afternoon inside the America First Event Center.

The win gave Tarleton (10-10, 2-4 WAC) its second straight WAC win. It was the first five set match the Texans have played in this season. The Thunderbirds (3-12, 2-4 WAC) took the first set 25-22 and then tied the match at two sets a piece with a 25-22 win in set four.

Tarleton hit .304 on the match, their highest hitting clip since the 3-0 win over Tennessee State on Sept. 2 when they hit .354. They were led by three players with double digit kills.

Megan Haynes landed a career-high 20 kills on .318 hitting as she helped power Tarleton to the victory. Freshman
Breanna McDonough finished with a career-high 14 kills on .357 hitting, also adding four digs and two blocks.
Grayson Schirpik followed that up with 13 kills of her own to go with seven digs.
Jaylibeth Garcia-Rosa made the most of her opportunities, adding six kills on nine attacks for .667 hitting.
Megan Hodges posted 37 assists and nine digs.

Defensively, both teams ended the match with six blocks. McDonough and
Ailie Hair had two each for Tarleton, with Schirpik adding one.
Ana Costas led the Texans with 23 digs followed by
Emma Halcomb who finished with 11.

The Texans found themselves in a 5-2 hole early on in set five after the Thunderbirds reeled off three straight points. SUU pushed it to an 8-5 advantage before the Texans dug their heels in. They ripped off a 5-0 run highlighted by two kills from Schirpik and one each from McDonough and Hair to take the 10-8 lead. The teams traded a few points, and SUU landed a service ace to put themselves up 12-11.

Tarleton responded by scoring four of the next five points as Haynes fittingly landed two kills, one of them the dagger, as the Texans took the final set 15-13.

The Texans return to Stephenville for three matches in Wisdom Gym this upcoming week. They kick it off with a non-conference bout with Texas A&M-Commerce on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The match will be a pink out where pink bracelets will be given away. It will be streamed on ESPN+.
