Texans play UTA for first time since 1991 on New Year’s Eve in Arlington

ABOUT THE MATCHUP
  • This is the seventh all-time meeting between these two, although the first since 1991. UTA leads the series 5-1 from games played 1977-91, with Tarleton's win on Jan. 29, 1983, 81-53 at home.
  • UTA has lost two straight and three of their last four. They lost their WAC opener Thursday 67-61 at California Baptist. Starr Jacobs led UTA with 19 points (6-12 FG), 14 rebounds and four steals.
  • UTA allows the third-most points in the WAC (71.2 PPG) and the highest FG% (.434).
  • The Lady Mavs have three players average 12+ PPG; Starr Jacobs, Kayla White, Jireh Washington.

  • Tarleton is 5-2 all-time playing on New Year's Eve, last playing on the final day of the calendar year in 2019. They beat McMurry at home 82-47 in that one.
  • The Texans are in the middle of a season-long three-game losing streak. Over their last two games, they've scored a season-low 43 points in each contest.
  • Defensively, the Texans are still doing well, ranked fifth in the WAC in PPG allowed (63.2), sixth in FG% allowed (.391), third in 3PT% allowed (.277), and fifth in turnover margin (+2.0 per).
  • Last year, the Texans also struggled offensively in their WAC opener, scoring 49 points vs. Dixie State. In the next game, they beat Utah Valley 61-48 to even out their WAC record.

  • Tarleton has only allowed more than five three-point makes once over the past six games. UTA has made the fewest amount of three-pointers in the WAC at 48, averaging 3.7 per game.
  • Tarleton's starting lineup got a shakeup in the last game. With Mayra Caicedo out due to injury, the Texans re-inserted Viktoria Ivanova and entered Starr Omozee for the first time this year. Omozee had six points and four rebounds in her 40th start in her 97th career collegiate game.
  • Chloe Callahan returned from injury, her first game played since Nov. 12 vs. UNT-Dallas.
 
WHO'S HOT
  • Tyler Jackson – Jackson earned her eighth double-digit scoring game of the season on Thursday out of 12 contests. She had a game-high 14 points, adding two steals. She's tied-22nd in the WAC in scoring this year at 10.9 PPG, second on the Texans.
  • Teresa Da Silva – Despite an off shooting night, Da Silva still put together eight points, four rebounds, two assists, four steals and two blocks. She now leads the team in scoring and rebounding, and is second in assists, steals and blocks.
  • Nyajah Mitchels – Mitchels was perfect from the field in the last game, 3-of-3 for six points, to increase her team-leading field goal percentage to .524. Among WAC players with at least 10 FGA, Mitchels is 16th in FG%. In her Tarleton career (two seasons), she's shot 52.0 percent.
 
NUMBERS TO KNOW
21.5: Tarleton has averaged 21.5 FORCED TURNOVERS OVER THEIR PAST TWO GAMES. They're now fifth in the WAC in turnovers forced per game at 18.8. UT Arlington is third in conference at 19.8 forced turnovers per contest.
 
5: On both ends of the court, the Texans are TOP-FIVE IN THE WAC IN THREE-POINT PERCENTAGE, fourth in shooting 30.3 percent from long range while forcing a 27.7 three-point percentage, third-best.
 
3: Tarleton has an opportunity to knock off one of the WAC's early top teams. In the latest round of the WAC WBB RESUME SEEDING SYSTEM, UT Arlington was ranked third.
 
8: Teresa Da Silva is in the TOP-EIGHT IN THE WAC in two major categories. She's fifth in scoring at 15.3 points per game, and eighth in assists per game at 3.6.

Tarleton will continue an early three-game WAC road trip at Grand Canyon and at New Mexico State. The Texans and Lopes will match up on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT in Phoenix.
