ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texans picked up their offense from their past two outings, but UT Arlington flashed theirs en route to a Lady Mavericks' 92-68 win at College Park Center on New Year's Eve.
The Texans (6-7, 0-2 WAC) lost their fourth straight game, continuing a season-long skid, while the Lady Mavericks (7-7, 1-1 WAC) snapped their two-game slide.
This was the first meeting between these two programs since 1991, the seventh game between the two since 1977. The Texans are now 5-3 all-time on New Year's Eve.
Tarleton scored the first bucket of the game, but it'd be their only lead on the day in Arlington, as UTA jumped out to a 10-2 run from there and held control for most of Saturday's contest. The Lady Mavs led 27-16 after the first quarter and 46-28 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Tarleton stormed out with new life, bringing the energy and good vibes to cut a 21-point deficit to just eight towards the end of the frame. UTA led going into the fourth quarter 67-56. The Lady Mavs quickly dashed Tarleton's hopes of a comeback bid, using an early 11-0 run to go up by 20 and cruise from there to a 24-point win.
Teresa Da Silva led the Texans with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting, adding four assists and two rebounds.
Tyler Jackson had 10 points and four rebounds.
Elise Turrubiates led the bench with 11 points and four rebounds.
Nyajah Mitchels,
Starr Omozee and
Mason Jones each chipped in nine points.
Four of UTA's starting five finished in double figures, led by Kayla White's 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting, to go with three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Starr Jacobs had 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting, seven rebounds and four steals.
UTA outshot Tarleton 34-of-64 (.531) to 22-of-57 (.386) and outrebounded them 42-31.
The Texans will continue their three-game road trip on Thursday in Phoenix at Grand Canyon at 7 p.m. CT. The Lopes are 9-4 overall, 1-1 in conference play.
