STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Tarleton Texans hit the ball all over the field at the Tarleton Baseball Complex on their way to a 10-7 victory over UTRGV on Saturday afternoon to earn the series victory.
The Texans (6-12, 2-3 WAC) plated runs in six of the eight innings they came up to bat, putting pressure on the Vaquero (11-8, 2-3 WAC) pitchers all afternoon.
Freshman
Trace Morrison led the Texans offensively with three hits, two RBI and a walk. Senior
Corey Young and junior
Dylan Kurahashi-Choy Foo each finished with two hits and two RBI, with Young scoring a team-high three runs in the game.
Tarleton starting pitcher, junior
Isiah Campa, left the game early for precautionary reasons. He threw 2.2 innings, allowing just one run on two hits, striking out four.
Tarleton and UTRGV were tied after the Vaqueros got two runs across in the top of the sixth as they knocked Tarleton sophomore pitcher
Zane Badmaev out of the game. Junior
Zach Gagnon came in to relieve Badmaev with two runners on and one out and was able to maneuver his way out of the inning.
Gagnon (1-0) went on to earn the win as he pitched the seventh inning as well. His final line was 1.2 innings pitched, allowing one run on two hits striking out two.
The tie game did not last long, as the Texans came up to bat in the bottom half of the sixth and pushed four runs across to stretch their lead to 9-5. They did all their damage with two outs. A Vaquero fielding error and two Texan singles off the bats of junior
Colby Seltzer and freshman
Jaime Perez helped push a run across.
UTRGV made a pitching change and Young and Morrison both singled to push three more runs across.
The Vaqueros threatened as they scored a run each in the seventh and eighth to make it a 9-7 game. Tarleton responded with an insurance run in the eighth off Choy Foo's bat as he hit an RBI single to left field to score
Bryan Aguilar.
Junior
Matthew Hickey earned the save, his second in as many days vs. UTRGV. He threw the final 1.2 innings, allowing only one hit and no runs.
The series finale comes on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT at the Tarleton Baseball Complex. It will be streamed on the WAC Digital Network and can be heard on 90.5 FM or at this
