ST. GEORGE, Utah
– Mikayla Kendall notched her 100
th save of the season on her second save of the night in Tarleton State's 3-1 loss to Utah Tech on Thursday night at Greater Zion Stadium.
Kendall became the first Texan and first WAC goalkeeper this season to eclipse the 100-saves mark with 8 against the Trailblazers. She is just the sixth NCAA Division 1 goalie to reach the feat this season.
Nicole Fels prevented the Texans from being shut out scoring her second goal of the season with two minutes remaining in the second half.
Avery Harr fired her 14
th and 15th shot on goal to tie the program's single season record that she set last season. She has recorded at least one SOG in three of the last four contests.
Harr streaked 40 yards down the sideline in the third minute to take a shot from the far left 20 yards left that was saved by the UT keeper.
In the 15
th minute of play, Kendall fielded a ground ball off a slow shot from 20 yards to notch her 100
th save of the season. She faced three more shots in the first half recording a save on each and keeping the Trailblazers' scoreless.
In the 27
th minute,
Mila Bettinelli found a pass in the middle of field and fired in a tailing shot that was just tipped out by the outstretched hands of the diving goalie.
Neither team was able to make any true scoring threats in the first half resulting in a 0-0 deadlock after 45 minutes on the pitch.
Utah Tech was quick to score out of the half breaking the scoreless tie four minutes into the second half. Brynlee Rider found the left corner of the net past Kendall to give the Trailblazers a 1-0 lead.
Just over 15 minutes later, UT added their second goal of the night originating from a corner. Emily Garbett sent the corner nearly 10 yards in the middle front of the goal where Kearney Hoggan was there to send a header past Kendall who was being shielded by a Trailblazer defender.
The Trailblazers added a third goal off a free kick from 20 yards out. Garbett's free kick found Hanna Carlisle who headed in an insurance goal for UT.
With just over two minutes remaining in the contest, Fels headed in
Jaycie Bass' corner just a few feet in front of the Utah Tech keeper, to prevent the Trailblazers from earning a shutout. The Texans were unable to answer two more times in the final two minutes and fell, 3-1.
Utah Tech outshot the Texans, 22-8 and 11-4 on goal. Tarleton held the advantage in corner kicks, 5-4 and was called for two less fouls than UT. The Purple and White also recorded eight saves to Utah Tech's, three.
Tarleton State will stay in Utah for a Sunday matinee against Southern Utah at 1 p.m. at the Thunderbirds Soccer Complex.
