STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State has commanded the all-time series against Incarnate Word, but the Cardinals forced a tough offensive outing by the Texans and snapped the Purple and White's nine-game winning streak in the matchup.
The Texans (2-6, 1-1 WAC) fell 57-42 to the Cardinals (5-2, 0-0 SLC) on Sunday at Wisdom Gym in Stephenville, their first loss to UIW since 2008. The Texans still lead the all-time series 20-9.
Turnovers plagued Tarleton State in this one, as the Texans gave it away 25 times to UIW's 12. The Texans outrebounded the Cardinals 41-29, but UIW outshot them 21-of-55 (.382) to 17-of-50 (.340). The Cardinals entered the game with the 17th best scoring defense in the nation at allowing just 52.2 points per game.
The Cardinals raced out to a 13-2 lead and never looked back.
Tyler Jackson nailed a three at the first quarter buzzer to make it a 16-7 Texan deficit, but it was a similar second frame and UIW took a 29-16 lead into the locker room.
Tarleton's offense picked up in the third quarter, and after UIW led by 20, the Texans cut it back to a 13-point deficit after three, 43-30. UIW maintained control in the fourth though to earn their fourth straight victory.
Teresa Da Silva led the Texans with 11 points and two blocks. Jackson and
Elise Turrubiates each added seven points, with Jackson grabbing four rebounds, and Turrubiates adding six.
Faith Acker secured a team-high eight rebounds.
UIW was led by Destiny Terrell's 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting and seven rebounds. Aliyah Collins led the bench with 12 points (4-8), and Nina De Leon Negron chipped in 10 points and three steals.
The Texans will head back to Louisiana for a pair of games this upcoming week. They'll next play at McNeese on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT at Legacy Center in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
