SAN MARCOS, Texas – Tarleton's match at Texas State Saturday was much like their match Friday at UTSA, with the most important similarity for the Texans being a win.
Tarleton won their fourth straight match overall to improve to 4-2 on the season, their third straight win of the 4-3 variety, winning by a point at Texas State in San Marcos, Texas, at Bobcat Tennis Complex. The Bobcats fell to 1-3 overall.
The Texans have had general themes going. For one, they seem to like the dramatics, winning three straight matches 4-3. Dating back to last season, that makes six of their last 10 matches ending with Tarleton ahead 4-3. Second, this is Tarleton's third straight time spoiling their opponent's home opener, ruining the day for Oral Roberts, then UTSA, and now Texas State. Finally,
Emma Persson has been a clutch singles player, owning the best record on the team of 4-1, and providing back-to-back days with the match clincher in the second-to-last singles match to finish.
Also, like Friday, Tarleton won the doubles point comfortably on Saturday, beginning with
Martha Makantasi and
Elsa Boisson in the top flight. They won 6-2 over Kate Malazonia and Mae McCutcheon.
Ximena Morales and
Clara Sobius, two freshmen, won the team point for the purple and white with a 6-3 win over Kiana Graham and Sofia Fortuno on Court 2. The No. 3 match went unfinished with Tarleton's Persson and
Celia Vaudiau up 5-4 over Jadeh Chan and Emily Niers.
Boisson responded from her Friday loss to put Tarleton up 2-0 on Saturday, beating McCutcheon 6-2 6-1 on Court 4. Boisson is 3-2 in singles this season, 1-0 at No. 4.
The Bobcats got on the board in the No. 5 spot, with Texas State's Andrea Pineda beating Morales 6-3 6-2.
Makantasi avoided a skid in singles with a top flight match win 7-6(2) 6-0 over Graham. The Texan junior is 3-2, all at No. 1, and has never lost consecutive contests in her 44 completed matches in her career.
Texas State made it 3-2 Tarleton with a win at No. 6, as Fortuno beat Sobius 4-6 6-4 6-1.
Persson, a freshman, impressed again with her second straight team clinching win at No. 2. She defeated Niers 6-1 3-6 7-5 for her fourth straight singles win.
To end the day, Vaudiau played just her second career match at the No. 3 position, her first since Feb. 18, 2022, and dropped to 2-2 overall this year. Malazonia won 5-7 6-0 6-3.
The Texans will have one more weekend road set before a long stretch at home. They'll end their February slate next week at Pacific and Sacramento State, in Stockton on Friday at 2 p.m. CT, and then in Sacramento on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT.
