Tarleton climbs out of early hole, but streak snapped in winner-take-all final match at Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. – Tarleton Tennis is facing yet another tough non-conference weekend, and although they competed and showed their resilience Friday, they lost their comeback bid at Pacific 4-3.

The Texans (4-3, 0-0 WAC) had their four-match winning streak snapped in Stockton, California, against the Tigers (2-2, 0-0 WCC). Tarleton came back from down 2-0 to tie the team match 3-3, but fell in the final winner-take-all singles match.

The Tigers took the doubles point thanks to wins at Nos. 1 and 2. Tarleton won the first doubles match at the No. 3 position, as Emma Persson and Celia Vaudiau blanked Danielle Zamora and Megan Carmichael 6-0. Pacific responded with 6-2 wins in the other two doubles matches, the top flight a win by Klara Kosan and Karina Chao over Martha Makantasi and Elsa Boisson, then the clincher by Alexis Sam and Tomi Main over Ximena Morales and Clara Sobius.

In singles, Pacific's Kosan took the first match to put the Tigers up 2-0 with a 6-3 6-2 win over Makantasi at No. 1.

The reigning WAC Singles Player of the Week, Persson, got Tarleton on the board with her fifth straight singles win. She defeated Main 6-3 6-2 to improve to 5-1 on the season, the best singles record on the Texans.

Sobius evened the team match score at 2-2 with a win on Court 6, defeating Carmichael 7-5 6-2. Sobius, a freshman, is now 3-4 on the year.

Pacific retook the lead at No. 4 as  Zoe Clydesdale-Eberle took down Boisson 6-2 7-5.

Morales kept the Texans alive on Court 5 with a three-set win over Sam 3-6 6-0 6-4. The freshman is now back to .500 in singles action on the season at 3-3.

Knotted at 3-3 on the team scoreboard, the winner-take-all match came down to Court 3 between Vaudiau and Chao. The Tiger won the first set 7-5. Vaudiau held the momentum late in her comeback bid, but an official ruling derailed the senior's chances. Down 5-6 and the game tied 30-30, Chao seemingly double faulted, which would have put Vaudiau ahead 40-30 with a great chance at a tiebreaker. But the official came in and said the ball snagged the line, flipping the score to 40-30 in favor of Chao. Vaudiau followed by winning the next point, but instead of having that be the game-winner, it made the game deuce instead. Chao won the next point to take the match and the team win.

Tarleton will have to cleanse this one quickly, as they'll have another tough match Saturday, playing at the identical 4-3 Sacramento State Hornets. The Hornets are undefeated at home (3-0). The Texans and Hornets will face off at the Sacramento State Tennis Courts at 2 p.m. CT.
