SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The future is bright for the Tarleton Texans, that much was clear from their match at Sacramento State.
On the heels of three freshmen's spotless performances in Sacramento on Saturday, Tarleton improved to 5-3 on the season with their 5-2 win over the Hornets (4-4).
Emma Persson,
Ximena Morales and
Clara Sobius were part of four match wins, including 3-0 in singles to buoy the Texans to a 4-1 February, all five matches on the road.
"What a showing from our young group, the freshmen have come a long way already and continue to grow each match we play," head coach
Elianne Douglas-Miron said. "I am proud of this team and the effort they put out."
Morales and Sobius started play with a win in doubles at No. 2, defeating Weronika Ejsmont and Best Lee 6-4. Juniors
Martha Makantasi and
Elsa Boisson clinched the doubles point for the purple and white in the top flight with a 6-4 win over Mayya Gorbunova and Tsveti Yotova. Persson and
Celia Vaudiau were leading 5-4 against Maddy Ferreros and Alexis Johnson, but with the doubles point decided, the match went unfinished.
Morales made it 2-0 Texans with her 6-4 6-0 win on Court 5 over Julia Moraes. Morales is now 4-3 on the year, including 3-2 at the No. 5 position.
The Hornets got on the board next in the top flight, as Gorbunova defeated Makantasi 6-1 6-4. Sacramento State then tied the team match at 2-2 on Court 3, as Tsveti beat Vaudiau 6-1 3-6 6-1.
Tarleton went on to win the next three singles matches, beginning with a comeback on Court 6 by the freshman Sobius. She defeated Lee 2-6 6-3 6-3. Boisson earned the match clincher on Court 4 with a 6-2 2-6 6-4 win over Ejsmont. Persson capped off the team win with her sixth straight victory on Court 2, defeating Ferreros 1-6 6-2 6-4.
The Texans' will now get some well-deserved time at home with a six-match homestand that spans from March 3-19. They'll next host a doubleheader against Tyler Junior College and Weatherford College on March 3 at 1 p.m. CT and 4 p.m. CT, respectively.
