Texans’ comeback bid falls short as UTSA walks it off in season-opener

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Tarleton plated its first two runs of its season opener in the ninth inning to take a 2-1 lead over UTSA.

The momentum grab did not last long enough, as the Roadrunners (1-0) countered in the bottom of the ninth, walking the game off to take game one of the series 3-2.

Down 1-0 heading into the top of the ninth, Tarleton (0-1) desperately needed a jolt on the offensive side to keep the game going. They were able to deliver with three consecutive singles from Jaime Perez, Payton Pennington and Mason Hammonds to load the bases with one out.

In the ensuing at bat, Trace Morrison hit a ball to the second baseman that scored Tyson Drake, who pinch ran for Perez, from third. UTSA got the force out at second base, but the shortstop's throw to first trying to complete the double play sailed, and Pennington scored off the error to give Tarleton the 2-1 lead.

Jake Burcham (L, 0-1) entered the game in the bottom of the ninth and struck out the first batter he saw. He then walked the next two, and in the next at bat Leyton Barry ripped a ball to right field for a two RBI triple to walk off the season opener and give the Roadrunners a 3-2 victory.

Simon Miller (W, 1-0) was credited with the win for UTSA, throwing 3.0 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits. He struck out seven and walked three.

RHP Will Stevens earned the start for Tarleton and pitched 4.0 innings allowing a lone run on no hits. He struck out five and walked seven.

Piercen McElyea was crucial in Tarleton keeping the deficit at one as he tossed 4.0 shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out six. At one point, he struck out five consecutive batters.

UTSA struck first in the bottom of the third as Barry scored Garrett Poston on an RBI fielder's choice to second base.

The Texans held UTSA to just three hits in the game, but 10 walks from the Texan pitching staff was the deciding factor.

Hammonds led the Texans offensively as he had a team-high two hits out of five total.

Tarleton will look to even the series tomorrow at 2 p.m. CT at Roadrunner Field with LHP Dylan Delvecchio getting the start on the mound.
