SEATTLE – Tarleton forced 22 turnovers by Seattle U, but a cold shooting day led to a road loss.
The Texans (7-16, 1-11 WAC) lost their season-long seventh straight game, falling 62-49 at the Redhawk Center in Seattle on Thursday. The Redhawks (4-17, 4-7 WAC) have now won three of their last four games.
Tarleton shot a season-low 23.8 percent from the field (15-63), compared to Seattle U's 38.5 percent clip (20-52). The Texans had a +13-turnover advantage (9-22), but they couldn't overcome the shooting woes and battle of the boards (48-36 SU).
Mayra Caicedo led with 14 points, adding six rebounds, two assists and three steals.
Emilia Axelsson pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while
Nyajah Mitchels (eight points, five rebounds) and
Jenna Dick (eight points, three rebounds) powered the bench.
This was Tarleton's second consecutive weekday middle of the day game, and the Texans' second "Kids Day" game of the season, as this one tipped off at 1 p.m. CT, 11 a.m. local time, in front of hundreds of screaming school children.
Tarleton got off to a good start, responding from a 4-0 deficit with a 9-0 run to go up 9-4 seven minutes in. Their lead grew to 12-6 before Seattle U evened things out and made it a Texan 13-12 lead after one.
Despite Tarleton making just 1-of-15 (.067) in the second quarter, they forced Seattle U to a 2-of-10 (.200) clip, and the second quarter finished at 10-8 with the Redhawks taking a 22-21 lead into the locker room.
Seattle U got hot in the third quarter, making 8-of-16 (.500) from the field, using a 15-2 run to go up by 15, 41-26, at the 4:22 mark. They held a double-digit lead the remainder of the game, winning by 13.
Tarleton will be back in Stephenville quickly, as they'll host California Baptist on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT for Play4Kay. Fans are encouraged to wear pink in honor of Coach Yow and show support for all those around the world fighting the battle against cancer. Tarleton Athletics will be giving out free pink wristbands while supplies last, and there will be a silent auction to raise money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
