ARLINGTON, Texas – Tarleton led for most of the game vs. UT Arlington on Tuesday night, but the Mavericks made a late push to ultimately down the Texans 6-5 at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Texans (14-7) entered the bottom of the seventh inning clutching onto a 4-2 lead, but UTA (9-12) plated two in the seventh and two in the eighth for their first lead of the game, one they would not give up.
Tarleton loaded the bases in the ninth but managed just a lone run as
Kooper Shook hit a sacrifice fly to score
Trace Morrison, making it 6-5. The next at bat for the Texans was the final one, as UTA made a force out at second base to end the game.
Both the Texans and Mavericks used eight different pitchers.
Zach Poe (L, 0-1) was tagged with the loss for Tarleton as he allowed UTA's two go-ahead runs in the bottom of the eighth. UTA's Jack Hagan (W, 2-0) earned the win as he threw the final 2.0 innings allowing one run on four hits.
Dylan Kurahashi-Choy Foo paced Tarleton offensively with two hits, two RBI, a walk and a run scored. Morrison added two hits and an RBI while
Cole Miears walked three times to go with a hit and a run scored.
Miears led the top of the eighth off with a triple down the right field line but the Texans stranded him there as they struck out and grounded out twice to end the inning.
Tarleton scored the first run of the game in the second inning as Choy Foo singled down the left field line to score Miears. Both teams scored two in the fourth, with Tarleton leaving the inning ahead 3-2. Choy Foo delivered again with an RBI single, scoring
Payton Pennington. The other Texan run came off a UTA throwing error as
Mason Crews advanced home from third.
The Texans went ahead 4-2 in the seventh as Morrison laced a double to left field that scored Choy Foo. UTA promptly tied the game at four in the bottom of the seventh and took the lead in the eighth.
Ryan Black led the Mavericks offensively with two hits and three RBI. Steven Saunders also finished with three RBI.
The Texans now turn their attention to the weekend as they will trip to Orem, Utah to take on Utah Valley in a three-game WAC series. First pitch on Friday is slated for 7:05 p.m. CT at UCCU Ballpark on ESPN+.
