5-run 3rd inning from UTRGV dooms Tarleton in game 2

EDINBURG, Texas – Despite Tarleton outhitting UTRGV in game two of a Western Athletic Conference series at UTRGV Baseball Stadium, the Vaqueros came out on top 6-2.
 
Tarleton (14-10, 1-5 WAC) pitching held UTRGV (14-12, 5-6 WAC) to just four hits on the evening, but a five run third inning from the Vaqueros proved to be the difference maker as UTRGV secured the series victory. The Texans allowed just one hit outside of the third inning.
 
Three walks, a hit batter, a passed ball and a wild pitch from Tarleton helped UTRGV bring home five runs on three hits in the third inning. The five runs were the first runs from either team as the Vaqueros took a 5-0 lead.
 
Grant Garza (L, 2-2) made his first start on the mound as a Texan. He was tagged with the loss as he threw 3.0 innings giving up five runs on three hits. He walked three and struck out two.
 
Tarleton brought home its only two runs of the game in the fifth inning. Mason Crews hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Alec Williams who previously singled, making it 5-1. Mason Hammonds came through with an RBI single through the left side of the Vaquero defense to score Grant Kerry who singled before, to make it 5-2.
 
The Vaqueros scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to up the lead to 6-2 on Brandon Pimentel's solo home run.
 
The two Texan relievers that pitched, freshman Reece Elston and sophomore Jake Burcham, combined to throw the final 5.0 innings allowing just one run on one hit. Elston tossed 3.0 innings, a season-high, striking out two and walking one as he allowed a lone run on Pimentel's home run. Burcham threw the final 2.0 frames, striking out three while not allowing a hit.
 
Grant Kerry finished with two hits for the Texans to lead the way. Pimentel paced UTRGV with two hits and two RBI.
 
The Vaquero's starting pitcher Angelo Cabral (W, 5-0) moved to 5-0 on the season as he threw 6.0 innings allowing two runs on five hits, striking out six. Jesus Aldaz (S, 1) picked up the save as he threw the final 3.0 innings holding the Texans scoreless and hitless.
 
Tarleton and UTRGV will play the final game of the conference series tomorrow at 12 p.m. at UTRGV Stadium. It will be streamed on ESPN+.
