STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton could not overcome a seven run seventh inning from the Sam Houston Bearkats on Friday afternoon at the Tarleton Baseball Complex, falling 12-3.
Tarleton (25-26, 9-18 WAC) allowed six home runs to the Bearkats (33-21, 22-7 WAC) with four coming in the seventh inning alone.
Dylan Delvecchio started on the mound for Tarleton and threw 5.0 innings allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits. He struck out three and walked one.
Things unraveled for the Texans following Delvecchio's exit. He left with a 3-3 tie heading into the sixth inning.
Sam Houston scored two in the sixth and seven in the seventh to take the 12-3 lead that ultimately was the final.
Matt Haley (L, 0-2) was tagged with the loss as he threw an inning, allowing three runs.
Grant Garza allowed six runs, all in the seventh inning.
Peyton Hutson threw the final 2.1 innings without allowing a hit or run.
Trace Morrison added two hits to lead Tarleton.
Carter Dobrinski hit a solo home run in the second inning to tie the game at one.
With SHSU leading 3-2 in the fifth,
Alec Williams was able to score from first on a failed pickoff and throwing error by the Bearkat catcher. The ball got all the way to the corner of the fence in right field.
Steven Beard (W, 7-3) picked up the win for the Kats, tossing 5.0 innings allowing three runs on five hits. Three Bearkat relievers combined to shut the Texans out for the final four innings.
Tarleton's senior day and final game of the season is set for Saturday with a 1 p.m. first pitch. The senior day ceremony will be held prior to the game.
