STEPHENVILLE, Texas
– The Tarleton State women's soccer team will continue its second season of play with a Sunday matinee contest against Texas A&M – Commerce at 1 p.m. at the Tarleton Soccer Complex.
Sunday's match will be streamed on ESPN+, and stats will be provided by StatBroadcast found on the Tarleton Sports website. Entry to the Tarleton Soccer Complex is free at every Texans home game this season.
Thursday night the Texans kicked off their second campaign. Tarleton State lead for 60 minutes of action, but the ULM Warhawks scoring a game-tying goal in the 89
th minute of the contest.
Avery Harr put the Texans on the board with a tip-in goal from inside the box in the 24
th minute of play. With seconds remaining on the clock, Stephenville native freshman
Victoria Cameron streaked down the sideline and took one final shot for the chance to break the 1-1 tie. But the shot went over the crossbar high, and the horn sounded to end the 1-1 draw in the season opener.
Three program records were broken in the opener in the 19
th game of its existence.
Mikayla Kendall played one of her best games of her collegiate career with 10 saves, the most by a Texan in a single game. Harr broke a pair of records with five shots and five shots on goal, both new program records for Tarleton State.
Last season,
Mila Bettinelli led the team with eight goals and 17 points and subsequently was named to the WAC All-Freshman Team. Bettinelli became the first Texan to earn a postseason honor from the conference. In addition to Bettinelli, 12 individuals were selected to the WAC All-Academic team.
Head coach
Pete Cuadrado and his staff are ready for their second competition season as a group. In total, 17 student-athletes and 10 starters returned from their inaugural squad. Cuadrado is in his 20th year of coaching and has totaled 174 total wins across his tenure at three programs.
Texas A&M - Commerce also opened with a tie in their opening match. The Lions drew 2-2 against future Texan opponent, Oral Roberts. Last season the Lions finished third in the Southland with a 9-9-2 record.
Freshman Hannah Bell started the scoring for the Lions with a goal in the ninth minute of the match. The Golden Eagles responded with a pair of 14th and 22nd minute to take a 2-1 lead. Less than 10 minutes later, the Lions tied the match at two on a header by freshman Hailey Griffith. The Lions split time in their opener in goal. Gillian McKenzie started the match in between the pipes before being relieved by freshman Sophia Dean to start the second half. Dean made one save in her 45 minutes as keeper.
Last week TAMU-Commerce defeated Hill College, 11-0, and SFA, 3-1, in their exhibition matches.
Ashley Gordon has begun her second season with the Lions and second as a collegiate head coach. Gordon is now 9-9-3 in 21 games with the squad.
Sunday will be the first meeting between the Lions and the Texans in the two programs' history.
Tarleton State will round out its three-game homestand with a Friday night match against Nicholls at 7 p.m. at the Tarleton Soccer Complex. As always, entry to the Tarleton Soccer Complex is free.
