Tarleton Women’s Basketball’s hard-fought effort comes up short at nationally-ranked Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. – Despite holding nationally-ranked Nebraska to a season-low 29.8% shooting and taking a second quarter lead, Tarleton Women's Basketball came up short 63-50 against the No. 24 ranked Huskers at Pinnacle Bank Arena Wednesday night.

Sophomore center Faith Acker recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds, becoming the first Tarleton player to record at least 10 points and 10 rebounds against a nationally-ranked opponent in the Division I Era. Her 11 boards set a new Division I Era record for rebounds against a Power 4 conference opponent.

Junior guard Karyn Sanford led the Texans in scoring with a career-high 14 points off the bench, knocking down four 3-pointers.

"I thought we really battled and hit some big shots," head coach Bill Brock said postgame. "I try to get them to understand that every possession matters, every minute you're on the floor matters and you have to have a competitor's attitude to compete in athletics. We showed a lot of growth and now we have to take this into next week."

Sanford's first 3-pointer of the game allowed the Texans to quickly respond to Nebraska's first four points in the first quarter. Nebraska looked to extend its lead with a basket and a pair of free throws, but Tarleton kept attacking. After a basket inside from Acker, senior guard Miannah Little raced all the way to the basket for a layup that made it a one-point game.

Little continued to make plays, knocking down a 3-pointer with less than a minute to go in the first period to make it a one-possession game. Sanford's 3-pointer before the buzzer allowed the Texans to maintain momentum with a tied game 13-13 through the first 10 minutes.

Following a pair of Nebraska free throws, senior guard Niki Van Wyk knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Texans their first lead of the game. Nebraska answered back with a basket from beyond the arc on its next offensive possession, but senior guard Jakoriah Long hit a jumper to tie up the score.

Five straight points from the Huskers gave Nebraska a two-possession lead, but Tarleton's relentless effort offensively allowed the Texans to make it a two-point game off baskets from Acker and senior forward Andjela Bigović. Tarleton's 54.5% from the floor in the second quarter helped the Texans make it a game going into the locker room.

Nebraska turned up the pressure in the third quarter and opened the second half with a 10-2 scoring run to take a double-digit lead. The Huskers forced the Texans into just over 21% shooting in the third quarter to take a 49-35 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Texans, however, refused to quit.

Nebraska hit a free throw to extend its lead, but Tarleton cut the deficit to six points thanks to a 9-0 scoring run. Senior Tyler Jackson came off the bench to find Acker for the inside basket and hit a 3-pointer on Tarleton's next offensive possession with just over five minutes to play.

Eight straight points from Nebraska made it a double-digit lead again, with the Huskers scoring on each of their final two possessions to prevent the Tarleton comeback.

Tarleton comes back home to Wisdom Gym to host its second Education Day game of the season Monday against New Mexico State at 11 a.m.
