STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Texans had a strong defensive effort the first three quarters and had a seven-point lead late, but they lost momentum and the Redhawks pulled out a 61-57 win at Wisdom Gym.
The Texans (7-15, 4-9 WAC) dropped their middle game of a three-game homestand, while Seattle U (2-20, 2-11 WAC) snapped their 14-game losing streak, winning their first road game of the year (1-11).
Tarleton State led by seven with four minutes to play, 56-49. The Redhawks closed the game on a 12-1 run, scoring nine straight in two minutes to take the lead, and only allowing an
Elise Turrubiates free throw over the final four minutes. Neither team scored between the 1:44 and 0:06 mark. After Tarleton came up empty with 1:07 to play, they didn't get another crack at that end until there were six seconds left, with Seattle U coming up with two offensive rebounds to bleed the clock. Down 60-57, Tarleton's
Miannah Little had a decent look from the top of the key, but it went off iron.
The Texans had two in double figures, as
Faith Acker secured 17 points and nine rebounds.
Jakoriah Long reached 15 points (5-5 FT), adding four steals and three rebounds. Little led the bench with nine points on three three-pointers.
Tyler Jackson contributed eight points, five assists and four rebounds. Turrubiates pulled down nine boards, and
Lexi Bull had seven rebounds off the bench, adding four points.
For the game, Tarleton forced Seattle U to shoot 20-of-60 (.333) from the field, but the Redhawks were hot from deep all day, making 10-of-25 (.400). Their own Julianna Walker made 6-of-10 from downtown, pouring in a game-high 20 points. Peyton Howard had 17 points and six rebounds for the Redhawks, and Mya Moore totaled 14 points and eight boards.
The Texans were hampered by their 18-of-61 (.295) clip, including 2-of-10 (.200) in the fourth. They outrebounded the Redhawks 46-40, but lost a rare turnover battle 15-12.
It was an offensive struggle for both teams in the first quarter, with both shooting a combined 6-of-35 (.171), leading to a 9-9 tie after 10 minutes. had a tough time finding their shots to fall ending the quarter tied at 9-9.
After a 12-12 game at the 8:30 mark in the second, the Texans found their groove a bit, including back-to-back threes by Little and
Andjela Bigovic to make it a six-point Tarleton lead. The Texans had a four-point lead late in the half, but Walker nailed a three at the buzzer to make it just a one-point game at the break, 25-24 Texans.
The Redhawks started the third well and took the lead, going up 30-27 over two minutes into the frame. The Texans then went on an 11-0 run, which bled into a 19-4 run to give the Texans their largest lead of the game at 12 with 3:21 to play. Acker, Jackson and Long combined for all 19 points, and the Texans entered the fourth with a 47-40 lead.
In the fourth, Seattle U cut it back to a one-point game with seven minutes to play, then the Texans had eight points between Long and Little to go back up by seven with four minutes left. That's when Seattle U took over to win the game.
The Texans will wrap up their three-game homestand on Thursday at 7 p.m. against UT Arlington. That will be Play 4 Kay Night, with free Play 4 Kay mini basketballs and pink wristbands available.
