EDINBURG, Texas – Tarleton State has dominated UTRGV since joining the Western Athletic Conference, and they continued on Friday with a 6-1 victory on the road at the Vaqueros.
The Texans (10-2, 1-0 WAC) started conference play with a road victory, knocking off the Vaqueros (8-7, 0-1 WAC) for the sixth straight time over the past four seasons. The Texans are a perfect 6-0 against the Vaqueros since joining the WAC, and they've outscored them 37-5 across those six matches.
Tarleton State is now 5-1 on the road. The Texans snapped UTRGV's three-match winning streak, dropping them to 4-4 at home.
The Purple and White won the doubles point for the 11th time in 12 matches this season, with wins on Courts 2-3.
Emma Persson and
Noelia Lorca began with a 6-1 victory at No. 1 over Kristal Dule and Valentina Urraco.
Elsa Boisson and
Ximena Morales then clinched the point on Court 2 with a 6-2 win over Lea Karren and Yaiza Vazquez. UTRGV won on the top court, as Isabelle Bahr and Marjorie Souza defeated
Martha Makantasi and
Maretha Burger 6-4.
Persson and Lorca are now 8-1 together, Burger and Makantasi are 9-3 as a pair, and Boisson paired with Morales have started 2-0 since joining forces.
Makantasi responded from a setback in doubles with a straight sets win in singles, starting things off right for the Texans with a 6-3 6-3 win over Bahr at No. 3. Makantasi is now 10-2 in singles on the year.
Adeliya Mukutdinova played in her third singles match of the season and improved to 2-1, defeating Urraco 6-0 6-1 on Court 6.
Lorca then clinched the team victory for the Texans at No. 4, as she took down Vazquez 6-2 6-3. Lorca has the best singles record on the team, now 11-1 in singles play.
Boisson and
Clara Sobius had the other singles victories for the Texans, both in straight sets. Boisson defeated Karren 6-4 6-4 at No. 2 to improve to 8-4 on the year, while Sobius also improved to 8-4 with a 7-5 7-6(5) win on Court 5 over Dule.
UTRGV got their lone singles victory on the top court, as Souza took down Persson 6-2 6-7(5) 1-0[10-4].
The Texans are now 1-1 through their three-match week. They'll next head to UT Arlington to take on the Lady Mavs on Sunday at 11 a.m.
