Home runs cost Texans at home against Lancers Saturday

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State Baseball dropped Game 2 of the weekend series with the Lancers.
 
Tarleton State (12-11, 3-5 WAC) fell short on the mound to California Baptist (14-9, 4-1 WAC) with a 22-4 loss in seven innings. 
 
Matt Haley (L, 1-4) took the start for the Texans with 2.1 innings on the mound, giving up seven runs (six earned) on five hits, one walk and one strikeout. Ryan Delgado started on the bump for the Lancers, giving up four runs on six hits, one walk and a pair of strikeouts in 3.0 innings on the mound. Jacob Wilson earned the win for CBU across 3.0 innings pitched, giving up no runs on two hits, no walks and three strikeouts.
 
The Purple and White tallied four runs on nine hits, with a two-run homer for Mason Hammonds for his first bomb of the season and a homer from Tyson Drake as well as one double from Brandon Howell.
 
California Baptist compiled 22 runs on 17 hits with eight home runs and a pair of doubles.
 
In the top of the first, the leadoff hitter for the Lancers took a hit at the plate to see a runner on and a homer to left field to tally the first two runs for CBU.
 
At the top of the lineup for the Texans, Drake wasted no time and cranked out a homer of his own over the right field wall to put the home team on the board. 
 
In the second inning, the Lancers' Julian Alvarez walked and a homer to right field from Nick Dumesnil brought in another pair of runs for a 4-1 lead for the visitors. 
 
In the bottom of the inning, Tarleton State chipped away at the deficit as Howell doubled down the right field line and eventually scored on a passed ball to see the score at 4-2. 
 
The top of the third saw three runs for the visitors after one double, a single, a walk and an error from the Texans. 
 
Tarleton State battled back again with another pair of runs in the bottom of the third. After a single from Drake, Hammonds sent a bomb over the left field wall for a two-run homer to mark his first home run of the 2024 season, bringing the score to 7-4. 
 
A five-run inning for the Lancers distinguished the flame for the Texans. A pair of singles and one out on the board brought Zach Poe to the mound. A walk loaded the bases and a second walk sent the first runner across for CBU. Connor Mcguire hit a grand slam to left to make the score 12-4.
 
In the top of the fifth, a three-run home run from Matthew Darr brought the lead to 11 for the visitors. 
 
The sixth inning was scoreless across the board.
 
California Baptist unleashed their offense with seven runs in the seventh to close out the afternoon with two solo home runs, a three-run home run and a two-run home run to seal the deal at 22-4.
 
The rubber match will see a new start time of 11 a.m. Sunday.
