NACOGDOCHES, Texas- Tarleton State finished the weekend 2-1 after a hard loss on Saturday afternoon.
Tarleton State (15-13, 5-7 WAC) fell short in extra innings to Stephen F. Austin (4-25, 1-11 WAC) to see a 6-5 final close out the series.
Freshman
Braydon Risley got the start for the Texans giving up four runs on seven hits, one walk and five strikeouts in 4.0 innings.
Jake Burcham (L, 1-3) closed out the game giving up one run on one hit, two walks and one strikeout in 1.1 innings.
Elian Balmaceda started on the mound for the Lumberjacks with no runs on one hit, six walks and six strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Caleb Rutledge (W, 1-1) took the last 1.0 inning giving up no runs on one hit, one walk and no strikeouts.
Tarleton State compiled five runs on 10 hits with doubles from
Cris Enriquez and
Cole Miears and a pair of stolen bases from
Ike Shirey and
Mason Hammonds. The Texans left 16 runners stranded throughout the duration of the afternoon.
SFA totaled six runs on nine hits with three home runs and a pair of stolen bases.
The first inning saw the home team on the board first with a single, followed by a groundout to advance the runner and a second single to bring a solo run home.
In the bottom of the third, a homer from the leadoff tallied the lone run for SFA for a 2-0 score.
Another pair of runs came in for the 'Jacks in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run home run.
The bottom of the fifth saw another home run for SFA to put the Texans down by five runs.
Tarleton State came alive in the top of the seventh with a couple of singles form Hammonds and Miears.
Brandon Howell walked to load the bases and
Trace Morrison was hit by a pitch to send the first run in. A two RBI single from
Kooper Shook chipped away at the deficit for a 5-3 score.
Hammonds got the ball rolling in the eighth inning with a single to put a runner on for the visitors. With two outs recorded, Miears doubled to center field and advanced to third on the throw as Hammonds came in to make it a one-run ball game. Enriquez kept packing on the punches with an RBI double to tie it up at 5-5.
The next three innings were scoreless but in the bottom of the 11th inning, SFA's leadoff hitter was hit by a pitch and the two-hole of the inning walked. A sacrifice bunt saw both runners advance. An intentional walk loaded the bases and a fielder's choice brought the final run home for the Lumberjacks to snap their 24-game losing streak at 6-5 in extra innings.
Texan Baseball will be back in action for a midweek battle at Dallas Baptist Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m.
